Hi there. I've just received my first batch of uncleaned Roman coins. I'd like your advice on what I should do. I've seen several videos but I dont have enough experience to know which coins I shouldn't mess with and which are safe to. Edited by whimsical 05/22/2014 8:57 pm

At this point there isn't much to see, so you should probably soak them for a while in either distilled water or olive oil. I'm old school so I prefer olive oil. Check the coins every week or so and you should start to see an improvement.

Thanks for the reply. I was going to do this but I was even scared water could be harmful. I'll post some pictures when I get some improvements!

just use distilled water (if you use water), you can't really go wrong. get an old toothbrush and maybe a wood toothpick make good low budget starting tools. with the things mentioned above, you really can't go wrong... you're not going to hurt anything.

I like to soak coins in hydrogen peroxide, the kind you buy at a drug store. The bubbles work well in loosening dirt. Then I use a nylon brush with the bristles cut short. Toothpicks and bamboo skewers also are good tools and won't damage the coin.
Good luck with your cleaning. It looks like you got some larger coins in your group.

I used distilled water or de-ionised water (never tap water). If it doesn't work you can always move on to olive oil. You can't use oil first and then try water. Patience is your best friend here.

Coming out nicely. Can you take a closer picture so we can see who it is?

The cleaned denarius looks like Severus Alexander with reverse of Salus seated, left, holding a patera and feeding a serpent rising from an altar.

Wow, that looks like it could be fun. How does one get started? How do you find them ? Is there a reliable source or do you just do a search on the web?
