Yes, I am looking to buy a raw Trade dollar on ebay, against all the conventional wisdom. Sorry, I just have trouble finding holed specimens in reputable slabs ;). Would you all please inspect these photos to see if there is anything obviously amiss with this coin. The seller has nearly 1500 for a feedback rating with 100% positive, so he seems reputable. I just have never had any desire to own a Trade dollar before starting my holed type set, so I don't know what to look for when it comes to finding the fakes. So I have 2 basic questions, is it real and what is its grade? Thanks!

Trade-Dollar

P.S. I have asked the seller for exact weight and diameter measurement, so I will add that info once I get it.

It looks genuine, but I wouldn't bid until you get the weight info.
Rest in Peace

It looks real to me. I would call it a solid VF30. Mike

Why the hole? Any specific reason why you like to collect holed Trade dollars? Just curious.

This look's very real. once received, you must weigh it. it should be 420 gram's minus the hole, probably still 418 gram's. the fake one's are usually dated 1874 and are made of alloy. they are very easy to detect.

Every date within the Trade dollar series should be looked at with suspicion if raw. I have seen each and every year - mintmark combination faked.

For this piece, I don't see anything that jumps out at me. If you can pick this up in the $50 to $70 range, I think that you would be safe. (still depends on weight). MAKE SURE that the seller offers a refund based on Authenticity just in case.

If I had to guess I would wonder about the seller knowing a fake from a real one !!

I dont like to see photos with the seller holding the coin with his hands!!!

The coin looks authentic in detail, I'm sure it has been cleaned, but this probly doesn't effect it for your use .
