I have a theory about the availability of 8 reales double-strikes.

Apparently, coin dealers who specialize get first chance to pick through collections ( inherited collections, etc).
It works like this. Coin shops and other dealers buy whole collections at as low a price as possible, hoping that some scarce coins are included. They then "wholesale" the whole thing to dealers who specialize in particular types of coin (Ancient, Swiss, or whatever).

There once was a noted dealer in Texas who specialized in the coins of Mexico. He would be sold such wholesale lots, pick out what he wanted to keep, then catalog and list the rest for sale. He kept the double-struck Mexican crowns.

He pretty well cornered the market.
