I have 3 coins in need of some identification. This is the second coin. I believe the year is AH 1222 or 1333? That is all I can get out of it. Also it is a very thin coin. I would love to verify the year, find out where it is from, what kind of coin it is, and if it is rare? Thank you in advance for any help~Katie
Unfortunately, this one is not a genuine coin. It is a jewellery imitation, in brass, of a gold coin from Ottoman Turkey. The original coins are dated "1223//28" - meaning the little number at the top is the regnal year "28". The folks that made these copies were a little careless with the copying and not only are the numerals for "2" and "3" badly drawn as to be somewhat ambiguous, but the regnal year has come out as "78" instead - and no Ottoman sultan reigned for that long.
We see these on the forum quite a lot; do a forum search for "imitation ottoman 78" and you will find several threads with them, like this one. They are in effect "costume jewellery". It is traditional in many Middle Eastern countries for women to dress up for festive occasions (weddings etc) wearing strings of coins. Women from poorer families who cannot afford to own strings of genuine gold or silver coins wear strings of these imitations instead.
The only unusual feature about this particular example is that it is "two-tailed" - both sides are the same, the reverse of the genuine coin. One side is supposed to show the sultan's toughra.
