I found this 1879 Morgan dollar add on ebay and I have the same coin and his ebay add said it was a Rare Date and his Buy It Now Price is $500. I consulted 2 AllExperts' Experts and the Red Book and they said it was worth $12-$14 and that it is not a rare date. This add is very misleading and should be corrected. It is not rare and is not worth $500. Also, there is no grading of AVF-30 that the expert I contacted has ever heard of.

Here is his the ebay add:

Here is my AllExperts reply to my question:

Does anyone know how to handle this?

An expert at AllExperts.com said it was only worth $12 or so.

What? The Red Book says it is worth $20 in VF-20. Besides, there is no AVF-30 rating in the Red Book or anywhere else. I think he made it up. Does anyone know of an AVF-30 grading? About Very Fine - 30?

honestabe,

Everybody is abbreviating these days AVF-30 (About VF-30). Hope this guy isn't intending to pay the mortgage with the proceeds from the sale.

Typical ebay overpriced, overhyped coins. Every once in a while you see someone like this. They put a huge price on a cheap coin in the hopes that some whose total numismatic information store was built on ebay comes along and throws away their money. Greasy, morally bankrupt, but not illegal. Honestabe, you would have a full time occupation if you attempted to act on all such auctions. There are hundreds, if not thousands, running at any one time. And that's only in Coins.

Only in the United States is "almost Very Fine" not an accepted and specific grade. The rest of the world does it that way. I gotta admit, though, you don't often see it used in conjunction with the Sheldon Scale.

hahaha how misleading..... but just funny. This guy probably made this auction to scam someone that knows nothing about coins. I would not be suprised if he has sold a common date coin this way. You have to give him a 10 for creative marketing and a 0 for integrity. It reminds me of when people were selling the PS2 BOX only for $300 and people thought they were buying the console..... so wrong.
