Hi guys, I am new to the forum, but have been trolling for awhile now.
I live in Surrey, BC and have a few questions for other Metro Vancouverites.
1) Why is there no coin clubs other than north shore, and Vancouver?
2) Why do you think there are no Coin shops in Surrey/Delta
I have tried to post on CL to see if others would like to meet up but I got zero response.
From CRHing, I know there are others in the area also doing it because the tellers tell me so (at a few banks).
SO people Please let me know what you think.
Cheers

from the magazine CanCoinNews for the past 4 years or so (I hav a stack)I have been ripping out coin club article-Across Canada lots are at 50 years as a club..I"m lucky in my city..You might have quite the time trying to start a new club!! It all starts with 3 people I'm told...Look for a place to meet that is free monthy rent...The Stamp club has to pay rent so membership is 20.oo to 50.oo a year...Good Luck...Others here could in theory Help in the future as You get closer...

Basically all of western Canada, except for major urban hot spots, is a coin dead zone. Or maybe I'm just down because the Toronto Coin Expo this weekend is so far away.

Based on selling quite a lot of items on ebay, I would say that coins are very much alive and well in western Canada. Quebec is clearly the source of strongest buying. There is also a lot of buying out of Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC. The Atlantic provinces are probably are active in line with their populations. Ontario has much less buying than you would expect. Given the populations, there is surprisingly little buying coming from Metro Toronto and Vancouver. So while you may feel you are in a dead zone, there are definitely lots of coin people around.

The Northshore and Vancouver clubs are pretty active and have a bunch of very keen members. You want to talk about a coin dead zone try Victoria BC , 5 so called coin dealers and very little to none in the way of collectors. Not quite sure how that works. The Victoria Numismatic Society is near death and on life support. Most of our ebay Canadian sales are to Quebec and Alberta. Pretty sure it has to do with the tax rates. Ontario is dreadful as is BC.

Welcome. I'm on the executive of the Vancouver club. I would suggest that Vancouver and North Shore are the survivors. South of the river, Western, Foote's and Phil's Bills are probably also the survivors. I do a bit of selling on ebay. I get most of my sales in rural B.C., Calgary, all over Ontario, and rural Quebec.

I live in surrey too, I used to CRH but then they started not giving out pennies and now for any other denomination its all mint sealed boxes with nothing but new coins inside. Why I think there are not so many coin clubs or anything like that is because there's just not enough collectors or no one has thought of starting any.

Normic67, I started in this crhing pennies a couple years ago, and stopped after the end of the penny, however I have found one hunny hole (sorry I wont tell) that sells me pennies. Also this past Saturday I went into an RBC, and did my whole routine of asking for quarters, dime and nickel rolls. And as the teller was waiting around for someone to go into the locked room, I chatted her up. at the end I jokingly asked her if I could buy any Pennies (knowing full well that at RBC they will NEVER sell you pennies). She retorts, we have lots of pennies, I don't see why we can't sell them to you. How many do you want she says?
I says Pardon?
I said I will take them all, I got 60 rolls of Pennies from RBC!!!
It was like Pennies from Heaven.
I have to still go through them, but I have high hopes for pennies from the 20's I love the old kings effigy.
BTW This same branch took in $3000 in silver 20-4-20 and 100-4-100 coins about 2 months ago. I was flabbergasted when she pulled out the bag and saw all the coins. Have faith, develop the relationship, and reap the rewards.

Quote: Western, Foote's and Phil's Bills Western is out in Richmond, apparently they have a presence in Metrotown as well (kiosk in the Sears store if I remember correctly). decent stock, friendly staff - but it's a long trip from Surrey. Foote's (Langley) is great once you get past the 80+ year old owners grumpy moods and strange business hours (keeps pretty regular hours but can and will close whenever he feels like it). Once he recognizes you after a few visits he really warms up. Closed Sunday/Monday which are my days off so I don't get out there as often as I like. Phil's... (Langley) only had one experience there, was basically given the "we can't be bothered with you attitude" even though I was the only person in the store. I guess facebook and candy crush are more important than talking to your customers!?! They do maintain a decent volume of ebay listings, of which I refuse to buy from just out of principle. there is also Cameo Coin out in Maple Ridge. lots of stamps and other collectables but still a decent amount of coins. prices maybe out of date but nice people and worth a trip every once in a while.

With the 20 4 20's they were all out of the airtites, and the teller was not being overly gentle with them, I passed (the $100 coins had already been taken)
I will probably dig into the penny rolls this evening.
I will probably post some of my past interesting find as well

Sorry to get off the subject a little.
Vancouver was my home away from home back in the late 60`s.
That was after the US dropped silver I would head to Van. and go roll hunting for silver and filling up my coin books and there was a coin shop downtown that I would buy from all the time. That where I got my Canadian Dansco type set plus most of my other Canadian coin books, the newest date is 1968.
I need to get updates on my sets from 1969 and newer. If I get my posts up to 250 I would like to trade for some I need.
I still have a stir stick collection from all the night clubs they had back then. Oil Can Henrys on Thurlow, Ritz Hotel plus many more. Great folks up there, made alot of friends.
Should have bought more coins and less stir sticks, a far better investment. The silver usually paid for the trip. And there were alot of coin and stamp shops to look through in the downtown area.
But when you are single and enjoyed the good beer and drinks and dancing with pretty ladies. Your only young once

Ok, so last night I opened about 20 rolls, and found nothing spectacular, oldest Canadian penny was 1957. I did find a 1933-s Wheat cent. However here are 2 of my more odd finds: 2011 Cent with Gas Bubbles? Any thoughts? This was perplexing when it slid off the coin next to it. I was not expecting something so thin. I have not seen anything like this before. Does anyone know a date range for this transit token? are they still being used? I googled it, and seen a few variations, and I know they are selling on ebay as well, but I did not find any specific dates. I will keep you all updated on my finds.
