Hey everyone,

New to the site. I just had a renewed interest in coins so I went though my coin collection that I had as a kid and I came across a 1936 Walking Liberty that has a couple of features that caught my attention:

Obverse side:

- Has a dent at 3 o'clock and also a crack/line that goes into the rim
- Where the 'Y' should be(you can actually barely see the bottom part of it) it looks like the metal might be raised up a little and feathers into the rim
- There is also a line going across her leg and dress. Not sure if a scratch or a die issue. It feels like one edge of the scratch might be raised

Reverse side:

- Appears to be extra metal at 3 - 6 o'clock
- The feathers to the bottom left of the extra metal are raised up a little. Looks like it starts at the top left of the extra metal/dent and goes about a 45 degree angle down to the left.
- Also a scratch going through the 'R' in DOLLAR

What do you think? Die issue? Scratches? Something else?

Thanks for any help!

-Adam

It looks abused to me, but I'm not sure about the metal at 3-6 o'clock. Someone more knowledgeable about this series will be able to tell you more.

Is the part to the top right of Liberty pushed inwards? If so that might explain why it looks raised beside the eagle's feathers.

Your coin has suffered a significant dent on the obverse which has caused the bulge on the reverse. The marks on the skirt and DOLLAR are gouges/scratches, all PMD.

SlurExe97: It does look like there is a impression on the Liberty side that matches the bulge on the Eagle side.

biokemist6: Thanks for the welcome! Do you think all of it is PMD? If so, what do you think would have caused the metal on the obverse side to be flush with the Eagle feathers, even with the feathers being raised just slightly from the rest of the Eagle? Just seems odd to me that the metal could have been pushed up so far but have the feathers be flush with it if its PMD. And where the indent is there is also a small piece that sticks out of it(best described as a mirror image of a notch) on both sides of the coin. Really curious how this might have happened.

After looking at it a little closer the 'America' is pushed in a little on the Eagle side, away from the rim. Normally I can look at something and say "Oh, it was probably caused by doing X Y or Z" but this one I can't figure it out. Mainly having the feathers being flush with the other metal is throwing me off. I would have thought the feathers would still be higher than the field if it was pushed up, not flush. Hmmmm...

Thanks both of you!

The coin was laying, reverse down, on a surface when the heavy object - which was larger than the whole coin, or at least large enough to cover the wing as well - slammed into it. the weight of the object kept the dent from being deeper than the surrounding devices.
