I'm new to the 5 Oz. America the Beautiful Series...(some new funds are making investment purchases easier now)...I know MOST folks in here are happy with their raw "coins", both bullion versions, and, Special Issue Proof Versions..no problem with any way, any collector enjoys this hobby, it's all good to me!...my mentor, an ATB dealer who knows the ropes, has guided me into sticking to PCGS slabbed SP70 issues..Proof versions in top grade..long-term price increases seem likely, as low mintages, combined with high demand, will make a perfect storm.
There is NOT a lot of information, well, let me put it THIS way...compared to MOST denominations, the ATB arena is thin..their very pricey in SP70, to say the least..it's not like hunting rolls of pennies from the bank!(which I still love to do)...my goal here is to find the folks, who, like me, invest in the highest grades they can afford, and, talk about availability, TPG's, prices, toning and blemish issues on post-slabbed coins(more and more showing up now), and, collections, and, where we have been, where we are going..mintage allocations...I find it all a very exciting and rewarding tangent of collecting..if you do to, feel free to share some stories, recent purchases, problems, good news, different labels, how they affect your purchase, weird news, whatever..my goal is to complete a full 2010-2014 PCGS SP70 F/S set, and, take it from there(all of my purchases are Mercanti signed, with a unique "Beautiful Parks" Label, with a unique PCGS coin #, and, very low pop #'s(I own the only Hawaii, and Grand canyon, with this particular label, and, believe me, paid dearly)..I have 12 of the 25 coins needed, so far. Finding a 2010 SP70 F/S set is hard enough, signed, with BPS label(if they even exist) will be nearly impossible.
Thanks, and have fun with this!

Never been a big fan of 69/70 collecting. I've got a MS69 Grand Canyon that has developed milkspots, which it did not have when it was certified, otherwise it would not have graded 69.

Machine,,You address my biggest concern on graded coins. I have at least 100 Commerative Silver dollars still in the OGP as from the mint. Always stored in the bank or my safe,,the capsules never opened. Many of these have develped a cloudy area around the coin much like I see on the E bay ones. I have never sent a coin to be graded because after 20 years they are not as perfect as when graded MS70 or PF70...Would they or do they lose value? I have been thinking of some 5 oz ATB just as bullion and a 50oz would be way cool. But I just cant pay what it cost to grade a coin knowing in 50 years when my grandson has it, it would not longer be the same MS70

There are only vapor blasted P-marked uncirculated coins sold by the Mint and un-mintmarked bullion that could be described as proof like or deep mirror proof like that is sold to the Mint's list of authorized purchasers. Any of the PCGS graded pucks with a SP before the numerical grade indicates a special specimen strike coin, in this case the uncirculated variety. There hasn't been a proof coin yet made of the 5oz.
