Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and I have a question about commemorative coins in security bags or rolls.

I went to my local bank a few days ago and asked if they had any Queens Coronation $2 coins in security bags or any Spirit of ANZAC $1 coins in security bags, the lady was nice about it and told me they only receive their coins in security bags and not rolls and that they are never full of new UNC commemorative coins. She said if I want them I have to go to a place that rolls coins, not bags them.

Is this true about commemorative coins because I was looking on ebay and there are heaps of people selling full UNC bags and rolls of commemorative coins, they are all bagged/rolled by Armaguard who also supplies to my bank.

I know that the Queens Coronation coins had a really low mintage and are very difficult to obtain, however I just find it hard to believe that a bank of that size never receives full bags/rolls of commemorative coins.

If banks never receive full bags of commemorative coins where do people get them from, I know the part where the lady said 'go to a place that rolls coins, not bags them' makes no sense, but that's actually what she told me.

Thanks for your help.

I am sure that whatever goes to the banks is random (from whatever the supplier has at hand). It's just the luck of the draw.

I have had brand new coins in Armaguard roll and bags. But sometimes there will be an old coin, or two, in with them.
I think it just depends what they load in the machine and, as one lot of mint issue coins is nearly through, then the next lot loaded on top could be a bag of bank returns.

I got most of my commemoratives from the till at work (working in two restaurants has its perks, free coffee and till noodling!) but they're usually quite bashed up by the time I get them.

I did get the coronation $2 this way and some very nice 1981 Charles and Diana 50c pieces this way.

Through noodling coins from the bank I've gotten very few commemorative coins, usually the bags are just random coins of the same denomination.

Whatever goes to the bank is random. There are still some nice coins out there to be had , but you need to be lucky. You also need to try the mint. The $2 commemoratives were issues in little baggies of 5, but the $1.00 Anzacs are not available, and can only found in circulation. If you become good mates with someone who is getting their hands on the bags of Anzacs, please let me know!
