I sent in a submission a few weeks ago and just got it back today. I was dis-appointed by their assessment as many people probably are but I think I am not in the wrong here. First there was an 1819/8 (clearly a small date O-101) that I put n the form that it was an overdate. Their variety plus catalog says that if there is no fee on the line next to a variety they don't charge to have it attributed. I put on the submission for under the variety heading that it was an 1819/8 so they would make SURE they noted it on the holder (This variety is worth more)They promptly sent it back with no such notation. Secondly this submission contained a 1795 Half dollar o-108 variety that because of the variety is usually softly struck and this should be accounted for in the grading as the details are not as pronounce to begin with. I figured at least an F-15 if not VF-20 for the grade-- It comes back F-12. Maybe I was just being wishful but you be the judge. I have attached pictures of first my coin, and the second set of pictures are an f-15 from heritage of the same variety and the 3rd are of an vf-20 from Heritage as well.

Are the Heritage coins slabbed.
If not the grades may be wishful thinking by them.

Heritage doesn't sell raw coins except for extreme exceptions.

Both slabbed by NGC no less! The Variety does usually have a softly detailed reverse so it must be graded accordingly. And I know grading is subjective but c'mon. They should take that into account when they grade a coin they know is that variety. The difference between and f-12 and a VF-20 is in the thousands of $'s.

The reverse on the VF20 is clearly better than yours IMO. But you do have a point about yours being undergraded.......should have been F15. Have you used NGC before?

Maybe Heritage got a "gift" grade because of their place in the numismatic community?

Your coin could easily grade F15 on a given day. In this day and age of market grading it's possible the old cleaning your coin received hurt it a touch. It appears to be a nice F12 for sure.

I have used NGC before and am usually happy with the grades. All of my submissions this time were harshly graded. Maybe someone had a bad day or got in a fight with their wife? I kind of figured F-15 , maybe a shot at VF 20. I was worried about a possible old cleaning so maybe that is why they were harder? Still a nice coin and I plan on keeping it anyway. Maybe a resubmit someday with a letter pleading my case for a better the grade.
