I don't know how to tell. It is crazy shiny, but more of a white shine than a mirror finish. Can't believe this was in a roll!

I would say yes. They didn't make proofs that year so the PL coins would be SMS, which IMO this one is.

Cool, that's what I'm thinking too. Here's a couple more pics with a little less glare.

Looks like a haze around the devices and that means polishing doesn't it?

Aw man! You think this is just a business strike that's been polished up?

Here's a couple more pics of the fields near the outer devices. Does that look like polishing?

I think this is an SMS Kennedy. Just an opinion based on the photos. It could change if I had the coin in hand.

Just curious: does an SMS coin have any value over a normal piece in the same condition? The Coin Market guide shows only trivial price differences between the regular and SMS coins up to MS-65 grade.

I'd just be pleased to get any silver half in a roll nowadays.

I don't think there's much premium for a SMS half that's circulated. But I get a kick out of finding proofs or "proof-like" coins. I always think... How did this wind up in circulation?

Probably inherited or stolen. Either way, the new owner did not know what they had and spent it.
