I noticed this PCGS-slabbed large cent on ebay this morning: 301181968867PCGS has it labeled as a 1796 liberty cap. But, looking at the pictures, I'm convinced it is a 1796 draped bust. Am I seeing things, or did PCGS get this one wrong?

The position of the 6, the wavy hair by LIBERTY. I would say Draped Bust.

It is definitely a draped bust cent. Not only is the cap behind the bust (proper for the liberty cap type) absent, but also the profile is characteristic of the draped bust head.

Thats what I thought- just checking to make sure I wasn't going crazy or seeing things! Odd that PCGS got this one wrong.

Yeah, it is rather obvious just by the look of Liberty's profile. The PCGS graders must have been drunk, leaving them confused with the two ladies!

Just a mechanical error, because it is obviously a draped bust. Unfortunately the reverse is completely gone so I can't get the attribution. It is ether S-111 (R-5) or NC-5 (R-7).

Is anyone else confused as to why this was graded FR-02 with the reverse being completely gone?

It does look a bit more like a PO-01 to me.

Any idea if PCGS would re-slab for free to correct the error? I saw the thread about NGC mis-attribution in the TPG forum, but this is a slightly different issue because it's not the attribution but rather the major type (cap v. draped).

That coin is clearly a draped bust. How could they possible label it a liberty cap?

Maybe someone was just having a rough day or something. Can you imagine how many coins they have to look at every day?
As for the slab, I would assume they would correct the error for free.

Ok, thanks. It was really just a hypothetical/curiosity question. I was never really considering buying it- seems quite a bit overpriced for what it is.
