I see a lot of counterfeit coins on ebay and questions on here. I have a list from a seller of these and thought it might surprise some that there are many common date coins being faked in China that I know for a fact are pretty darn good fakes.

Here is a partial list I am sure. It probably gets longer every day. These can be purchased directly without COPY or REPLICA stamped into them.

I do not condone or wish to promote this in any way.
I am posting this information for people to be aware that it does not have to be a rare coin to be a fake.
I understand a magnet sticks to these coins, at least if they are of silver color. However, for a significant price, people can buy the dollars in actual silver.

If it costs $200.00 for a silver fake, it still could be quite profitable for a coin like that to be sold if it's real version is worth many times that.

BEWARE

Thanks for the list. I wonder, does a magnet stick to the fake pennies also?

i would hope that by now that anyone willing to spend more than a few dollars on a coin would be aware of the chinese counterfeits. there is one really easy way to avoid being "duped" once you familiarize yourself with the coins you collect, ie: STUDY the die characteristics of the dates and mintmarks (not just the priceguides and the pop reports) once you do that the fakes stick out like a sore thumb. I've been buying raw coins on ebay for several years, I've never bought a counterfeit without intending to

Have you ever really seen a counterfeit 3CN? I've never heard of one other than possibly "COPY" versions but they are completely legal. If you have seen one...where...and how can I obtain them, especially if they're good?! Are they contemporary counterfeits, meant to circulate, or those meant to fool the collector. This is something I did a little research on and found nothing of substance.

I'm a bit dubious that there's really a such thing as a counterfeit 3CN that's really up to collector snuff, but I'll be one of the first people to be excited about it!

Now, 3CS are a different story. I own two of those.

I would be interested in the 3CN as well. I am into the harder to reach 1880's dates to finish my collection so I would like to see one that is not an obvious reproductions so I know what to look for.

in my counterfeit research I have seen mention of contemporary bogus 3cN. never seen one myself, but if the secret service was aware of them, I'm sure they do exist. most likely good enough to "blend in" quite well.

Does anyone know of specific sellers on ebay who are selling these counterfeit coins? Do they do it on purpose or pick them up accidently? Just curious since I do shop on ebay. Am trying to educate myself, but it does take a while. Thanks!

So basically everything of any value is being faked. If people start faking coins that have a value under $10, we're all screwed. I don't want to have to study the mintmark position and such on a F-12 1918-S Lincoln or something similar

Not really a good reason if you know what to look for. I know that ebay is a haven for conterfeit coins, with that said, I have educated myself on what to look for and what
is real versus faked. There are good buys on ebay at times and to pass them up because of a possiblity of them being faked does not make sense to me. I have a set of rules that I use when purchasing from the bay.

1) Location of seller. Anybody not in the US is written off immediately.
2) Quality of picture taken to display merchandise and the description of what is being sold. If I can pull the image and examine in greater detail on my computer I am all the more willing to bid.
3) I never buy from anybody who has a feedback that is below 99.8. One bad sale could wreck that sellers feedback until more transactions occur.
4) I always ask for more pictures if appropriate. If the coin is graded by NGC (for instance), I check their website with the cert number, if the picture is included on NGC's website, I compare it against what is shown in the auction.
5) I listen to my "Gut".

I have not been stung yet and do not plan to but always remember that you can buy fake coins from your local coin dealer and neither one of you are even aware it is not real.

99.8%....that's a pretty high threshold. I have two separate accounts and my feedback is lower than that on both of them, but I am an honest seller. So you only allow 1 bad transaction out of every 500! I think you're being a bit harsh. Also think of the buyers who give neutral just because the package arrived in 5 days instead of 4. Or just the buyers who are just being plain unreasonable.

I understand avoiding sellers whose feedback is like 80%...or those who have only sold <10 items, but 99.8% is pretty high to institute an automatic write off.

I buy a lot of my coins off ebay, but would be cautious about buying something very expensive from someone other than a reputable coin dealer. A few negative feedbacks aren't a problem with me as it could be a gripe from an impatient buyer. If I'm buying something costly and the seller has a few negative feedbacks, I check the comments to see what they're complaining about. It's usually something to do with shipping.

However, I have been skunked twice, but since they were inexpensive coins and I buy a lot from ebay that's not a problem with me.

As has been implied above, "education" (education, education) is essential... whether buying (or selling) on ebay or not. I once saw a counterfit being sold by a known very reputable seller (I am certain this was inadvertent). As long as return guarantees are in place... and as long as a buyer/(seller) does his/her homework... you should be fine. The Open Market, with it's risks and rewards, that's all part of what collecting is $o $ati$fying. IMHO

I decided to pick out a few here to show and tell.
I superimposed a light watermark of COPY on them so the images can't be abused. There is no REPLICA or COPY stamp on these fakes.

The images do show some of the poor mushy lettering.
Some missing details or over exaggerated date such as the 1912 V nickel but in hand these have luster and nice color and are pretty good fakes for inexperienced collectors to fall for.

Notice the 1912 nickel is a common coin.
The Morgans really look good and the seated half I show here has what looks like a golden natural tone on a cleaned coin.

Gotta be careful.
They make key dates and commons.

Here ya go ... for educational purposes only.
