I would appreciate your opinions on the grade of this 1830 Large 0 Capped Bust Half. I'm leaning toward a VF-20. BTW, the flag on the "5" is abbreviated, it seems.

Thank you.

Unfortunately I think VF20 may be a stretch. RedBook grading has a well defined shoulder clasp being a key ingredient, and photograde doesn't lend itself perfectly either....I think F-12 is a better fit.

I'll go with F15.

I could see it going VF, although it's F18 to me.

I don't see the lack of detail at the shoulder clasp as being a wear issue. I would think the center of the clasp would be lighter in color if it was wear, I think it's a weak strike. I'd give it a VF.

As I indicated in the opening post, I'm leaning toward VF, but am having trouble resolving what appears to be excellent detail in Liberty's hair, for example, but relative flat, worn appearance of the stars. In hand, the clasp at the shoulder is complete, but barely so. I've had little success getting a good photo to show that...which probably says that she won't make VF on RedBook's standards, but the ANA Grading book I've got doesn't put so much emphasis on the clasp...

In the final analysis, this was likely a weak strike and has circulated enough to show significant wear. I like the coin, but the balance isn't as nice as you see on many of the busties.
