I understand James Taylor has left ICG to join ANACS, does anyone know the details and what position he will assume there?
Thanks

That is news to me. I spoke with Mr. Taylor shortly after the Aluminum cent was certified. Where did you hear this?

Very interesting indeed. I met Mr. Taylor at the F.U.N. show in Florida as well as the last Palm Beach show in West Palm Beach. His enthusiasm about the ICG product/service was one of the reasons I gave ICG a second look. I submitted coins for grading and was very pleased with the service/product as grades for some of my semi-key date Lincolns were right in line. Grey Sheets have ranked ICG ahead of PCGS and NGC: http://www.greysheet.com/This is NOT a fluke as ICG has been running even with, and mostly ahead of PCGS and NGC. Also, Mr Taylor believed that the ICG slab with the Intercept Shield was the ultimate in slab protection and presentation for your coin. Couple that with the company rule that none of the employees can buy/sell coins really impressed me about ICG. Now...he is going to a competitor. Personally, I had opportunties to work for my competition, but I refused as I knew that I would have to go back to my customers and convince them that everything I used to say was "no good" and that they should now change gears. I felt my integrity would have been damaged. I couldn't do it and I wonder if Mr Taylor is going to have the same enthusiasm for ANACS as he had for ICG. ANACS sure could use help in customer service. 120 days for services to be rendered (after they IMMEDIATELY cash your check/credit your VISA) is ridiculous. No email or feedback that your coins were received is another pet-peeve I have with ANACS. Their slabs may be smaller, but are they as good as PCGS, NGC or ICG for protection and all? In my opinion, they are not as tough and as good as the other top 3 TPG's. So I wish Mr. Taylor well and I sure I will see him at the Palm Beach show later this year. I am sure something must have happened as we will find out what REALLY caused him to leave for ANACS. Interesting indeed...

Zakgold, Perhaps Mr. Taylor does not have to worry about what he said about others products in the past. The things that I read about his work at ICG indicate that he promoted their products but he did not run down the competition. I submit coins to ANAC's all the time and have not run in to any of the problems you bring up. ANAC's always tells you how long the economy waiting time is. They are very timely with their $20.00 Express Service($15.00 for 5 or more coins)Because of the fairly low fee's I have never used the economy service but have heard it is very slow. On larger orders, 15 or more coins, they have even reduced costs per coin further! I have never had a problem with direct contact by phone. For a few bucks they fax you results on the day they ship your coins back. I am thrilled that James Taylor is now part of the team. It can only make things better and I am happy because ANACS is my favorite TPG as you may have guessed. Everyone has favorites and I respect that. Many folks chose a TPG based on what result they are hoping for with a particular coin. I chose ANACS for consistency in grading. I think ICG has wonderful holders and are well on their way to being tops in the business. The only smear they have, that time is erasing was their liberal grades on moderns. I have several ICG slabbed coins that I am very pleased with as well. I have not dealt with them directly but have heard the customer service is good. They get high marks for authentication and attribution as well. You indicate some suspicion at Mr. Taylors joining ANAC's. What do you think happened? Mike P.S. Do you think ANACS slabs are inferior to the point of allowing damage to occur to the coins? That's a tough one to digest! Or did you mean something else?

Hello Mike, I for one have had a few problems with ANACS lately. I send all of my Indian cent Varieties to ANACS for attribution and holdering. The last two 5 day sevices have taken at least 18 days each, when asked about them, they tell me they received them 4 or 5 days later than the Postal receipts show. I don't mind things being a little late sometimes, but when they sign for something one day and tell me they received it 4 days later, that angers me.I've talked to James numerous times at shows, and he also belongs to our Fly-In club talk forum. He seems to be a fair person and very dedicated to the hobby, I think he can and will make ANACS a better service. It was a bit of a shock to see he's moved, and I only have his old ICG email address, thought someone here might know what position he was given at ANACS. I'll let you know if he post anything about it on the FIC board. Later,

Wow. I certianly hope that Mr. Taylor takes the same enthusiasm with him. A very good grader and very good at public relations. He is one of the few that are very easy to deal with in person. Anacs is a pretty good outfit overall. While they have some issues (all do), Anacs is known for their attribution services. I think that this will be a good match for both.

Mike...
Let's put grading aside for a minute. My beef with ANACS is that their customer service and response is poor and slow. Just because I sent in coins under economy service doesn't mean they should take nearly 4 months to render their services. They immediately deposited my check, only to play with "my" money for 4 months! I never received an email with a trackng number or "something" that showed they actually received my coins. When I called, their attitude was, "What do you expect for economy service?". Not deterred, I tried them again and this time it took "only" 107 days (in house) for them to complete their service.
I have heard from a number of collectors about issues that "daveyn" experienced...5 day (in house) service that took 18 days to complete. That's not acceptable and if your services are clearly advertised, you need to deliver. If you don't, then you should receive a voucher or something. Customer service is rewarded when you think of it. Remember Dominoe's Pizza when they first came out? Your pizza was delivered in 30 minutes or less...if not, your pizza was FREE. Maybe they don't have the best pizza, but customers loved their service!
In the above example, ANACS tried to claim the coins were "in the mail" when most of us that submit coins can easily track shipments and see to the minute when it was received. Their excuse was just that, another excuse for poor service.
As for their slabs...one of the main reasons why we slab other than authentication and grade opinion is protection and presentation of the coin. An ANACS slab doesn't offer nearly the protection like PCGS, NGC or ICG. ICG has it right with the Intercept Shield. NGC has recently started using air-tight sealed slabs. Try busting open a recent NGC slab, their slabs are built like a tank! Busting open an ANACS slab is relatively easy and you think they could of upgraded their slab as others have done.
Back to grading. I agree that ICG is more "liberal" with the modern proofs and modern coins (MS67 or better) and believe they should watch this area of their business closely. ANACS is NOT ranked very high in the grey sheets and when it comes to prices realized for auctions, their slabs fall behind NGC who is way behind PCGS. At least their prices obtained are better than ICG, but ICG has only been around for less than 10 years. ANACS has been around long enough to perfect their product, so why hasn't it? Poor marketing? Poor sales? Poor customer service?
So maybe James Taylor can "whip" their customer service into shape. They sure need it, otherwise, they will loose business just like any other business that takes their customers for granted.

You have to take into consideration that Anacs has changed hands a couple of times also. While the name has been around, the current staff has not. Anacs has some of the strictest grades on most issues. However, they are a bit off the mark in customer service. I use Anacs for attribution only, and then I always pay the money to get it back fast. At the shows, they offer a 24 hour turn around and it works well. They are pretty friendly at the shows, and will attribute coins that all the rest won't touch. I hope that they begin to work on different tier systems and hopefully this will bring up the turn around times. Budget service is great if you can get your coins back in a reasonable amount of time.
Give it a few months and see what Mr. Talyor can do. I find it kind of funny that Anacs has not released a press release on their own site. The last is the news of Amos Press buying the company.

Zakgold, have you ever called customer service? I called them today to enquire about a special on gold grading and brought up daveyn's allegation. I was told that on gaurenteed service, for any coin that took beyond the five days a free voucher should have been issued. Call 1-800-888-1861 and present these issues to Customer Service. Please call them as I am dying to here how they handle it. I have had nothing but positive experiences with contacting them. PCGS is the king of crap when it comes to delaying orders. Anything is an excuse not to deliver on time for twice the money. Again, can you point out some ANAC'S slabbed coins that have suffered from poor packaging? Or are just judging them by how hard they are to open? Post an e-mail after you call them with these complaints and tell us how they were handled. I can't answer for economy service, but charging your card 107 days early sounds like a mistake and is totally out of line. 107 days turnaround sounds like "lost" to me! What time estimate were you given on economy? There are saying 6-7 weeks right now, about the same as PCGS......Mike

I called their customer service and they basically said, as previously posted, "What do you expect for economy service?"...as yes, it is their policy to charge your card up front before services are rendered. Deposit the money...you wait for almost 4 months...services are rendered. This is NOT a mistake as it happened both times and customer service stated, "...that's the way it is". It is NO incentive for ANACS for fulfilling their service on a timely basis if the money is already in their hand. They must and should address this issue or it will turn custommers off...like me. As for the slab product, I would bet anybody that they (ANACS) are much easier to break open (not as strong and resiliant) compared to NGC, PCGS and ICG. Even SEGS (who I will not use) provides a stronger slab product than ANACS. Again, if I want to have a coin graded and authenticated, and if you are going to protect it, I would want a product that is sonically sealed, and/or air-tight, and/or with the Intercept Shield...something that is going to protect my coins from the environment (all things being equal). Couple that with presentation/storage capabilities, registration numbers, mintage numbers, attributions (if any), stacking, etc., are all reasons why the TPG's have improved their slab over the first slab they ever introduced! Show me how the Anacs slab has improved over the last 5 years... Now, PCGS is at least telling collectors the anticipated turn around time (up front) and will at least email you when your coins are processed and in the system. They are slow, but at least they are up front about it. I also have a big beef about selling First Strike coins and Jessica Lynch signed slabbed coins. What nonsense! Again, after meeting James Taylor...if he has any say into the current customer service and/or product offer by ANACS, it can only be a good thing for ANACS because other than varities and would be "body bagged" coins, I would rather submit my coins to the other 3 TPG's. Maybe they will now get it right...

For what it's worth, I have sent in 3 coins in the past month to ANACS. I called to find out how long their economy service turnaround was and was told 6 weeks, so I used the 5-day. The coins were back to me within 9 days. Since I sent them First Class Mail and they FedEx overnighted back, that makes exactly 5 days in their facility. I have been very pleased with them and am impressed by their grading. I have not seen one yet that I disagree with (which is a lot more than I can say for PCGS and NGC). I love their grading standards and the fact that they will net grade. I am also comfortable with the fact that I could break out these coins and send them back and get exactly the same grade from ANACS (something else that can't be said for PCGS or NGC). To be honest, I haven't seen much of ICG and don't have an opinion as to their grading. Out of the approximately 20 that I've seen, the grading seemed okay and I really liked their slabs. Personally, these days, I'm leaning very heavily towards ANACS. NGC has sold itself to ebay and PCGS is selling itself to the highest bidder (in my opinion). Yes, coins in these slabs will get more money, but I'm much more interested in selling an accurately represented coin.

Zakgold, you did not say if they gave you a time estimate and then did not follow through. What do you mean by "basically"? You did not say on the five day service if they provided free vouchers for tardiness. You have not answered the question of whether or not the containers are allowing coins to be damaged. You are however hawking the Intercept Shields and that I cannot argue with that as they are great. ANAC's is an economical service that the little guy can afford. They are second to none in attributions and authentification. They provide a valuable service for a very reasonable fee. Who did you speak to when you called today? Were they willing to make reparations for the "eighteen day turnaround"? I will contact them on behalf of you or daveyn to help correct these issues and make good on their gaurentees as I'm sure the management would never accept such lousy service and lame excuses. Again, I think they are wrong for charging until they ship the coins. I never had a delay so I never paid attention to the charges. If you mailed these overnight or insured mail that required a signiture and had the proof, how could they deny it? Check in day does not count at any of the TPGS's as a day. The first "Business" day after check in is day one, followed by 2, 3, 4, and the fifth day is grade and mail out day. You chose and pay for the type of mail return you want, I always go next day. In all the years I have been submitting they were one day late once! I hope these are isolated problems and not something that has happened since they were sold last year. Mike

Hello Everyone, now don't get me wrong here, I know it doesn't sound like it, but ANACS is still my choice of services. I too like the fact that they will net grade a coin, I never went along with the idea that a coin could just be a nothing. I know some people would never buy a net graded coin, the stigma of "cleaned" "whizzed" or "recolored" really turns them off. I collect for the variety, and some of the coins I find may have been dipped once, but as long as it's not too severe it's OK with me. I will give them a call to discuss the 5 day submissions, I just assumed it was a result of the changing of ownership, and thought no more of it until this thread. I really do think the addition of James Taylor to ANACS was a great move on their part, and a great benefit for those of us who use AMNACS.

Mike...help us out and use a paragraph every now and then. "Basically" means the general content of the conversation without stating the exact verbage. Look...I said all things being equal, you would think that ANACS could have adapted measures to improve the design of their slab when it comes to presentation, storage and protection. Their slabs are no where as strong and resiliant as other TPG's where by, all things being equal (I am repeating myself), their slabs are indeed questionable when it comes to protecting coins from enviromental damage. A slab that is air-tight, sonically sealed, with Intercept Shield protection is better than one that is NOT...all things being equal. Put in this way, if you were to design a slab for protection, preservation and presentation, would you use the ANACS design? I did not call today as my phone conversation took place a couple months ago after my second submission. "daveyn" is the one that had the issue with a 5 day submission that took 18 days, not me. However, this is NOT an isolated incident as I have heard from many collectors that Anacs is "more slow' than the other services. If they are slow, that is. one thing, but when they hold YOUR money before services are rendered, there is NO incentive for them to get the job done As for day the coins are in house, I start counting "one" the next business day when the coins are received. Between Fed-X or USPS with delivery confirmation, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to prove when coins are actually received at a facility and who signed for them. I agree with you that ANACS is good for varieties and attributions since hardly anybody else offers detailed varieties as Anacs. Now, if I were running a TPG, I would grade EVERYTHING. If a coin came in and it was a counterfeit, I would grade it 1909-S VDB COUNTERFEIT, slab it and return it to the submitter. There would be no registry number, bar code, or grade, just a basic description. The same goes for cleaned or dipped coins. I would grade it similar to ANACS with a NET Grade. If the submitter wants to crack it out upon its return, so be it, but at least the coin was authenticated (or not), graded and slabbed. But as I state these issues, I trust that James Taylot will look at their current business model, keep the things that they are doing right and improve on areas that need to be addressed. Remember, "If it isn't broke, BREAK IT!" Take fast and make it faster. Take great and make it greater. Take smart and make it brilliant." If you don't, somebody else will and that's how businesses go out of business.
