What worries me, is the 2x2 cardboard material and the cloth underneath of the two pictures aren't the same color

Fuzzy, that's because the camera auto-adjusted differently because of the difference in the sides of the coin.

Personally I feel like having your pictures taken with an auto adjustment is just as bad as altering the pictures. I choose my camera settings based on what makes the picture of my coins look exactly like the coin in hand. Not just what will make the coin look most appealing.

Has anyone ever heard of "missing chrome on one side"? Seems this would be very rare if at all real, I have my doubts about its authenticity.

There is an actual coin variety for the 1944 and 1945 nickels where the chrome is missing on one side of the coin, usually the reverse. If this one is real, it can be worth a lot depending on the grade. From the look of it it looks real to me but I'm a suspicious type. It certainly would be a nice find! If I were to buy it though, I would ask for a few different pictures of it since the one side does look "black and white". Can never be too careful.

Strange this post came up...I was just looking at my nickels I got in my change...The obverse side is dull and the reverse is as should be...I ran it trough my program under histogram colourcube analysis and the both sides of the coin should (when normal) be almost the same when it comes to the "Number of unique colours"...But as you can see, the reverse is made up of 26234 colours variations and the obverse is made up of 23471 colour variations...There is not a good match.. Maybe I should run this guys coin trough the same procedure.

ICCS no longer certifies "Missing Chrome" or "Partial Chrome" variants. They have seen a large surge of these type of coins being submitted in the recent year, including some scarcer types (e.g., 1953 mules and 1954) and they suspect someone is removing or electrochemically altering the chrome plating... Impossible to prove of course, but they are taking the high road to safety and not certifying any.
My gut feeling is that mint state versions are fine - but I would not touch a circulated "missing or partial chrome" example...
