Sorry for the poor photocopy of this very rough Chinese note.

2 quick questions on this photocopy of a real note a friend asked me about...

1..Is there any value on a note like this in US currency?

2.. "If" the note was complete and with normal wear,..would there be any value in it?

My feeling is that such a low denomination would have little value in our currency ,..but I just don't have any info on this note.. The bottom edge on this photocopy is ~6" across.

Thanks for any info that can be shared here..

This is not a genuine note with any face value. It looks like a piece of heck Money burned at Chinese funerals.

It looks like the paper we burn during special occasion where we honour our ancestors. You could buy bundles of these "Hell money" or "Heaven money" very cheap (the paper feels lower quality than newspaper paper) in one of the Chinese worship supply stores in my local wet market. That was in Indonesia, I don't know if you have these in North America.

Glad to be of help

By the way, I found the name. It's called jīn zhǐ, meaning gold paper. The Mandarin character is e'纸. Here it is on the English Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_paper
If you understand Indonesian read the Indonesian wikipedia too, there are some things not on the English page and vice versa

Just saying, not all of them look plain like these, there are also many with full colour print with nice illustrations. Try googling "Hell bank note", there's some nice examples even though they're not as nice as the ones we usually get back home.

And in my family we don't just fold them like that before burning, we actually roll them one by one to make a closed tube shape then burn them. Different family, different tradition I guess.
