I've read things on this forum about certain plastics producing an ugly tarnish or film on coins. I am pretty sure this was referring to holders that contacted the coin directly but I am wondering about "Plano" type organizers. These are similar to the type of box with small compartments that a lot of fisherman use or you would put screws and things in in a garage.

Mostly I was planning on putting lower value stuff (random foreign and maybe junk silver) in them and storing things temporarily before sorting and research. I just don't want to damage anything if I leave it in there a while.

Anyone have any experience with these?

I don't have any personal experience with Plano for use with my coins, I have been storing some collectable plastic miniatures in some, and have had no issues. I think the issues you are talking about is associated with long term storage, if you are just keeping them until you can sort through them short term you should be ok.

You could always email the company and try and ask some questions about the chemicals in the plastic.

Also I would recommend having some desiccant in there to reduce/eliminate moisture.

I am in the fishing industry and asked the question to a Plano rep a few years ago.... Bottom line, if it is not made for food, it is not made for coins. I don't know how much weight I put behind his statement but there it is.

Interesting Fromms, I guess that is probably a good rule of thumb.
Rest in Peace

I agree with fromms, if something is not made specifically for coin storage you must make sure the plastic is FDA and/or NSF compliant.

Unfortunately those Plano products are good for storing fishing items, but definitely NOT archival material for coins. The plastic will degrade and cause that film.

Make sure you stick with archival products, PVC free, like Polysterene, Mylar/Melinex, etc.

Follow up question: would it be ok to store slabbed coins in this type of case?

Well ok thanks everyone. I guess anything of value is going into proper holders albums and the safe.
