I recently won this coin on ebay and it has rust/toning/idk what on it. It's a 1987 PR69, so I'm assuming this occurred after the coin was slabbed. Is this coin no longer a PR69? I'm thinking it's seriously dropped in value now and I should return it. Do these slabs often let the coins rust like this?

Notice the large rust spot between the L and I in "LIBERTY" and another one under "TRUST". These are big brown rust spots, you can't see them well in the picture but they are ugly on the coin.

Generally the problem exists BEFORE the coin is slabbed.
It just hadn't shown up yet.
So the problem shows up AFTER the coin has been slabbed BUT was started BEFORE the coin was graded.

If you can return it and get your money back then get it done ASAP.

Yes, coins can degrade in slabs. If there was an old cleaning/dip the grading service might not have picked it up when it was originally submitted. If the coin was improperly rinsed then residue might show up as a toning spot after a few months or years.

I think this is what you are seeing on this particular coin.

Yes, they can. The slab holders are not air tight, so it depends on how it was stored.

Thanks for the heads up! The seller offered return/exchange so I'm covered. But thanks for the info, good to know I have to be careful with these slabs!

Exactly why you should rinse any coins with acetone right before you mail them to a TPG. Also, people often store slabs improperly which can cause issues. Slabs should be stored the same as you would a coin in a 2x2.

You shouldn't buy PR-69 coins because any proof coin is like always PR-69.
You're just paying more for the slab.

There is no way this would grade proof 69 under any circumstances. Something had to have happened after it was slabbed. That is a shame.

That coin was improperly dipped prior to slabbing. Takes time for the bad rinse to show.
