Good day! This seems like an excellent place to ask about a penny found in my till more than 30 years ago. It seems to have been made from a triple clipped planchet. How would triple clipping have occurred? There seems to be symmetry in the clipping, as if it had been clipped in 3 places all at once. However, my understanding is that the planchets would not have been produced in such a way that would permit this. Thoughts on how this coin came to be clipped in 3 places would be appreciated. Possibly it has been manufactured after having left the Mint, or it is otherwise not made from a clipped planchet. That would also be important to know. Cheers!

Someone may have clipped it after it left the mint making it PMD. The biggest marker to identify a clipped planchet is to see if the weight checks out. If this is genuine then the coin should weight 2.8g even after the clipping. I've seen double clipping on 1980`s before. Like this one: http://www.numicanada.com/medias/pi...ent-1980.jpgBut a symmetrical triple clipping? I don't know about that...

I can see the Blakesly effect opposite each of the 3 clips which would make this coin more probable. extremely rare if it is genuine!! I hope its real.

Hello castlecary. Welcome to the board! Your coin looks like an authentic error coin to me. I have been collecting clipped 1980 cents for a while now. I have about 20 double clips for 1980 but only one triple clip purchased in the year 2001, so you're coin is probably uncommon. Nice find!

Thank you for all of your answers!
Scissel mentions collecting 1980, and both my coin and the first reply are dated 1980.
Is there a reason that 1980 was a good year for clipped coins?

I was told that in that time RCM hired a private company (I think brinks) to destroy all error or non worthy coins. So what happened was brinks would end up with bags and bags of coins. some bags of coins never made it to the melting pot. That's just what I was told. Not sure if its true

Has anyone ever seen a quad clip?

Never seen a quad clip. I have seen a double clip with one being a curved clip and the other being a straight clip...
I do have a couple triple clipped nickel dollars...

This is such a scarce error type, that I decided to post to an old thread, rather than create a duplicate one. This is only the third 1c triple clip I have come across; the other two I have are from the 1980s (1983 and 1985). It was a bit of serendipity, as I picked this one up from a flea market dealer in the fall of 2021, and only sold as a "large clip". Some dealers just don't pay much attention to lesser errors, or grading, as this one is a nice red-brown mint state coin.

I'm not saying that is not a genuine clip as I'm sure you wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't, but for my own understanding, I thought that genuine clips had a dovetail on the rims. These seem straight. Is there a special reason for this or am I wrong in my assumtion. Still trying to figure out clip errors.

Once clips get to a certain size, usually 10% or over, the rims taper completely differently. Do a search for large clips here, or look at those posted in this thread: http://goccf.com/t/189188Not to scare you, but large, straight clips can even be harder!
