Checked the Mint's website to see if there are any special design events for the centennial of our great Lincoln Cent. Anybody know of any firm plans? I think it would be really cool if they would, for the 2009 strikes, go back to the wheat reverse, with the VDB restored to its 1909 place on the coin. Proof sets could have the above changes plus original bronze alloy. Just my thoughts for a nice 100-year tribute.

Only thing I have heard is there is going to be 4 different reverses honoring different times in abe's life. Also they are going to mint for collectors pennies in the original metallic composition ie. the old copper coins not the zincolns. Other then that I dont think much info has been released. It will definately IMO cause a skyrocket in lincoln prices which is already starting today in early semi keys. The early teen S mint coins have nearly doubled in price on ebay auctions in the past 6-8 weeks. Oddly enough tho the 1909-s, 1914-d, 1924-d, and 1931-s seem to have dropped in price by about 15 to 20%. I think that the set as a whole across all dates will go up drastically between now and this time next year and then even more with the release of the new designs in 2009. It would be a good investment, again IMO, to get as many key and semi key dates in the highest grades you can now as well as more common dates in high grades. I am trying to finish up a set thats red BU's from 1930 on and then as many earlier reds as I can afford. But its not a set I will ever part with even if the prices go thru the roof. Again this is all my personal opinion so take it at that. Steve

I agree, the price of Key and Semi-Key Lincoln cents should go up in price. Now would be a good time to fill in those holes.

When will the mint ever stop with making twenty different designs of the same coin? This is starting to get ridiculous.

I wish they would just make one commemorative bronze cent. Just one, S mint and nothing more. As it is they will make four different designs, and charge too much for them. I dropped out of the State Quarter thing back in 2001, and the Presidential dollars, I never bothered. I haven't even seen them beyond getting them at the bank to send to collectors overseas. The San Fran Commemorative Dollar was the first Mint purchase I had made in years, a lovely coin in Uncirculated but what the world were they thinking with the cheap and flimsy packaging.

Unfortunately for real, true, sincere coin collectors this is now the way they are going. The reason is the average, uneducated in coinage persons go goofy over this stuff. They run to banks, coin shows, flea markets for the chance to buy one of each type. There are numerous organizations making a fortune on cheap coin holders. Notice the stupid ones that look like the map of the USA with a slot for each coin? There are massive amounts of books being produced by anyone that can write on coins. I suspect that the amount of coin collectors, poor name, has gone up by many millions each year lately and the Mint is profiting massively.

The design changes are probably the biggest thing bringing in the new collectors. If a change is on the 2009 cent it will catch peoples attention and that could lead to some of them wanting the 1909. This may lead to a Red Book which may make them want a few of the older, better date coins.
