I was digging through my late grandmother's collection this past winter and came across this (IMHO) gorgeously toned dollar. The Queen was facing up in the commemorative case.

Thoughts?

Nicely toned!
The original case is what caused the vast majority of these silver dollars to tone. Some nice, some ugly.Finding one with absolutely no to toning is a challenge.

Beauty!
These tone pretty well, I've seen a couple that were almost as nice as this one. The case is to blame (Or to thank?) for the toning.

That 3rd pic does show the dollar so well.

What would that grade as.?. I'm guessing SP 66,..and the rarer NWL variety..?
I also have one 72 like the 3rd pic with the colour not quite as intense.

Do the 72's from the sets all show that strong cameo affect?

So what does the toning do to the value of these coins?

Generally, these coins are very common, even in higher MS Grades and a coin toned as nice as this sets it apart from the general common stuff that passes through all the time. Something like this, with a strong cameo, high-grade and superb eye-appeal would demand high premium and would be scooped up pretty quickly.

I've seen this kind of toning on more than a few nickel dollars. The reason for the intense toning is the cases that they were sold in, as they got older, the resulting chemicals emitted caused some of these to tone intensively. Most often though, you a Blue-Red-Golden theme, I haven't seen one with these colors before.

Nonetheless, it's a really nice coin

What would be considered a high premium? Double the melt value?

Melt value is about $7.50 Nicely toned ones can be had for about $15, that's about double melt value.
