I copied this from an article.....
This past week the U.S. Mint has uncovered part 1 of a 4-part document serious about John F. Kennedy and the half-dollar piece that commemorates him.
Did you know, as a law the design on a coin cannot be changed for a minimum of 25 years?
On November 22nd 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated and within weeks there was protest to approve an exception to the law. On December 17th 1963 president Lyndon Johnson submitted a bill to Congress authorizing a re-design on the Benjamin Franklin Half-Dollar. Without hesitation the House of Representatives took up on the bill and it was signed on December 30th 1963 creating an instant collector favorite the Kennedy Half-Dollar.
You can find part 1 of this presentation here at:
http://www.usmint.gov/campaigns/?action=KennedyTo further commemorate the anniversary of John F. Kennedy they have released new Silver and Clad versions of the 50-cent piece but the US Mint does not stop there.
Later in the year they will be releasing a new 50th anniversary proof half-dollar in 24-karat gold. This piece has been a mystery to most collectors as to when it will be released. We will post the release date as soon as the mint notifies us.
For anyone interested in purchasing these new 2014 Kennedy Half-Dollar pieces the U.S. Mint is offering two-roll sets for $32.95 and 200 coin bags for only $139.95. These halves have been minted in Denver and Philadelphia. The Mint has also released its yearly 14-coin Silver Proof Set for $53.95. It includes a special 90% silver Kennedy half-dollar.
