I picked this up some time back in a pawn shop for about $5 over what was its melt value at the time. A variety that's underrated for rarity and numismatic premium, so while certainly not a primo specimen, I was pleased to find one at all at that price point. A bit atypical in that the obverse is much more presentable than the reverse, where there are numerous nicks and gouges, the worst of which are clearly visible in the closeup of the mintmark (which is the flush "S" type). I imagine that if submitted for certification, it'd come back XF but with a "details" annotation for mechanical damage, the threshold for which has, I believe, been crossed in this case.

I agree with EF possibly details and VAM3 LDS. Great buy for 5 over melt.

It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures exactly where the flat spots are, but I would agree that this coin is in the Extremely Fine range. I'm not sure about the mechanical damage, but nevertheless, that's a great pick up for $5 over melt! Congrats!

Here's a little better look at some of the high point wear, as well as lesser (albeit still significant) dings -

I've always liked the 1882 O/S Morgans. I'm not sure how it would grade given the dings, but it's a great coin for only $5 over melt.

The coin does have damage but it's a nice coin still. I would grade AU-50.

I never saw this until I took a photo of it, but notice how the cavities across the eagle's body, the two up near the neck and the three others lower down (plus the longer mark on the wing) run parallel to each other. I wonder if these aren't due to its having been put through a coin counter?

Thanks for posting those! I would still say to me it grades a EF-45, but it could possible make an AU-50 in hand! Again great find!
