What's the most expensive coin you've ever seen in person? Please note that I'm asking about the most "expensive" coin. I'm not talking about rarity as I don't want to get into a debate as to what constitutes rarity. I'm not even sure for myself, but I seem to recall seeing one of the 1913 Liberty nickels on display at a long past Long Beach show. Or I could be wrong.

A PCGS proof double eagle... Liberty head. I searched up the PCGS price guide value and it said over $200k. It was awesome.

I own two 1909 S VDBs in MS 64 and MS 65. They are pretty much the most expensive coins I can recall, because I don`t go to shows often.

A 1796 Draped Bust Small Eagle Quarter in extra-fine at a local coin shop. The dealer said that he had bought it in a large collection from a prestigious local family and had already lined up a buyer for it. He estimated that at auction it would be worth 40k+.

I saw an 1804 silver dollar in the Smithsonian in D.C. There may have been more expensive ones there, but that is the one I remember. They have a tremendous collection there.

All five of the 1913 Liberty nickels when they were on display at the 2003 ANA convention in Baltimore. WOW!

Probably the 1913 Liberty nickel display or the time I got to hold 3 1804 dollars at once! I've seen a the pattern $50 gold coin at the Smithsonian collection display a long time ago, that is probably the most expensive coin that is never going to sell. I've been lucky to have held quite a few coins closing the million dollar mark. One of my friends has probably owned or handled most every major rarity known in US coins, I know he had the highest grade Trade dollar Collection, the King of Siam set, and a 1913 Liberty nickel all at the same time, shortly there after he created the California Gold Group with some other dealers to purchase the entire SS Republic Gold hoard. Some of you may know him from that info. He isn't as into coins lately, but still keeps his hands in the market. Edit - I forgot I also held both Brasher Doubloons Punch on wing and punch on breast, pre slab era in my hand! Q. David Bowers brought them with him in his pocket to the ANA while I was there! Now back then they were the talk of collectors, today the prices haven't kept up with where they should be on them IMO. http://coins.ha.com/itm/colonials/1.../1201-5100.s #2 and #7 are the ones I've held, now that one sold privately for over $7 million I guess that is the most expensive coin I've had in my hands bar none.
