Notice where the metal is flaking, or breaking apart, the metal is lighter in color than the rest of the coin. This light color is indicative of an improper mix of the alloy - exactly what causes the strange color pattern of a "woody" cent. Sometimes an improperly mixed alloy can result in faults within the metal stock which we see here as a lamination.
