Does anybody have any idea what is up with this cent? Being copper it should weigh @3.0-3.1 grams like the normal 1980P LMC pictured first. I am guessing that .5 grams is outside of tolerance. Also, it makes a distinct high-pitched ringing sound when I drop it on a wooden desktop, a very different sound from a normal copper cent's thud-like sound. Unfortunately it does have yellowish crud on the obverse, however I decided not to give it an acetone bath until I had an idea of what kind of metal I was dealing with. All help and opinions are welcome, thanks!

What is up with the different color on the obverse? Is this acid contact in those areas? The rims seem flat looking?

It is a yellowish crusty substance, above the surface, that may come of with acetone. It doesn't appear to be acid contact. It may stain the coin some though. Yes, the rims do not look normal, they are kind of flat. It is a strange coin for sure.

So if it doesn't look acid etched, then it might be a thinned planchet? If something is on the coin, the weight maybe even more reduced when you remove it?

The flat rims and weakness on the shoulder and above the NW corner of the Memorial indicate a thin planchet, there was simply not enough metal to flow into the deepest recesses of the dies.

That makes perfect sense, thanks. Why does it have such a distinctive high-pitched ring when dropped?

I was thinking thin planchet. Looks like Lincoln is a czar with that get-up

The ring tone is a function of both the composition and the dimensions of the coin. If you have two disks of the same diameter and composition the thinner one will have a higher pitch.
