"Bosses at Morrisons say a steep rise in the numbers of shoppers paying with coins from overseas meant they have had to refuse to accept £2 coins at automated check-outs at some of their stores in the West Midlands until they can fix the technology.

"They say the most common offenders are Iranian 250 rial coins, and Thai ten bath [sic] pieces."

Unusually for dailymail.co.uk, this time it is the picture and subtitle captions that are correct, referring to "baht".

Also, "A spokesman for coin experts, Jewellery Quarter Bullion, said: 'The key with these machines is weight and diameter. A £2 coin weighs 12 grammes.

"'It may well be that shoppers are not looking to rip anyone off - in some cases, there is very little difference in currency value..."

I bet the latter remark was taken out of context and was actually referring to other Sterling Area coins e.g. Channel Is.

The 10 THB is worth about 18p,

and the 250 IRR about 0.6p, presumably a lot less than the metals it was made of. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1689.html

The article also fails to do the most basic digging as to the history of £2 coin counterfeiting, which it also touches on.

I filled my boots up in Kenya on my honeymoon when I found out the 50p blanks were being used for cheap local currency.

Fascinating story, Hello moralclimate ! . The first thing that hit me about the 2 most common offending coins is that their weight is less than our 2 pound coins .....so if the machines at Morrisons accepted them no wonder they have a mini epidermic of such incidents
That story also raises quite a few interesting questions : why so many Iranian coins in the West Midlands ? I can understand Thai coins ,but Iran is another matter

What also is concerning is that the machines rely mostly on diameter and weight to determine legitimacy of coins, could this be why many dodgy fakes proliferate endlessly ...

If only I lived in the West Midlands I would have probably got one or two of those interesting foreign coins in change

...Oh no...I didn't pay through the nose for my 50p blanks but that's a little disappointing. I'm guessing these are all without a rim? I paid £5-£10 for my pre and post 1997 50ps (large and small) but paid around £38 for a 50p blank with a rim. I paid far too much I know but it was the first time I saw a 50p blank with the rim...to me that shows the blank had gone a step further in the minting process

No, the blanks are not in direct circulation and therefore easy to come by. They are first struck with a design like the coins of any other country (in this case it was probably Kenya, 5 shillings, 1985?).

Surely if they're not in direct circulation they are harder to come by rather than easier to come by?

I forgot to say this last week but Morrisons self service are still giving out £2 in change.
At least the one I went to was anyway.
Rest in Peace

This probably explains why when I'm searching ebay for 2 pound coins I keep getting results for bulk lots of Thai 10 baht coins. I never looked at the listings, but now bet they mentioned something about being the same size/weight as 2 pound coins.
