Hi. 1. Benji: I fell out of my chair laughing at the bunny. 2. Thanks to everyone for the kind comments and suggestions. 3. Image: This is a dealer's picture of the nickel. I'm not sure why I don't have one of the first Morgan I bought. I probably saved it into an unknown file. I'll find it. In the meantime, here's the nickel. The photos are surprisingly quite accurate.

So now it's about how much I should have paid. Or not. (Which is what I was asking about in the first place.) I thought it was about whether you like the coin. I'm so confused. I wish I had something to top the bunny with a pancake on its head.

I'm saying that the nickel in your picture and the one that sold on Teletrade on July 1, 2007 are one and the same. On July 1, 2007, a 1943-D NGC MS66* nickel 144197-026 sold probably to MBCoins on Teletrade for $15. I'm further saying that if someone was trying to sell it for much over $30, then I would have a problem considering a purchase of that exact coin that seems to match the pictures you posted.

I'm only responding the best way I know how to the question you asked. You may think that collectors don't like the slabbed coin market because we are all old cranks with axes to grind, and I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth.
Even though I don't like it, I sure do try to understand the market for slabbed coins because I often have to buy them. So I check prior sales of similar coins. When I do that work, I sometimes find the exact coin someone is trying to flip for a huge profit after buying it pretty cheap on Teletrade.
That is what is apparently happening here. Several people have already noted that there's not much reason to attach meaning to the star, but it's about whatever makes you happy.
You're allowed to buy on Teletrade too.

If you are happy with a purchase, don't worry about it. I once advised a friend to pay someone $25,000 to exercise their option on a piece of property, thus getting it $75,000 under market.

Very nice, I like it. I like the reverse the best. Can't believe that I missed that on teletrade, for anywhere near $15 bucks it would have been mine.

Well, I like it and I'm going to keep it. I bought the coin in a real auction. I don't know how to use Teletrade yet.
halfabust: <<You may think that collectors don't like the slabbed coin market because we are all old cranks with axes to grind>>
I don't think that about collectors since I happen to be one. But I appreciate that your experience is vastly more than mine and your comments are quite helpful.
Incidentally, halfabust- I did follow the link and I did understand what you were saying. In my reply I was kind of going for "ironic", but it came accross as sarcastic. Sorry.
I'll have a picture to post tonight of one of the star morgans. I don't have that coin in my hands yet because I won it over the internet from Stack's auction of 8/5 in Milwaukee. I have a couple of photos, but they're at home and I'm at work.

Probably the picture doesn't do the coin justice, but that 1943-D nickel looks kind of, well, ordinary to me. I would hope for some monster toning or maybe a super strong strike on a star coin. Maybe the star was awarded because this coin "just missed" a 67 grade?
If I can digress for a moment, that $15 Teletrade purchase comes with a minimum $8 buyer's fee plus $4.75 minimum shipping. Throw in the 8% sales tax for us California buyers and you're up to $30, which doesn't seem like such a good deal. I used to buy a lot of coins through Teletrade but prices just seem too high now.

Stephen, I'm sorry I have a hard time reading 'tone' on message boards (and everywhere else) and I tend to get a little too strident regarding certain issues in numismatics. The bottom line is your own happiness.
Jaobler, I agree that Teletrade prices for a single coin are trending way too high. But the markups I see people getting in some cases appear to make the price worth it if they are buying "dealer lots." I wonder if higher volume purchasers have some kind of "deal" worked out with Teletrade?

Half: I do understand the thing about "tone." I think that's why they have these smiley-face variations available for us to use in these posts -to indicate tone. And it works. Which is an interesting thing in itself to consider. Anyway, here's the Morgan that I haven't got in the mail yet. NGC gave this coin a grade of MS65*.
