Artdio....

I really don't mean to pick on only you.

But I have to ask ALL the other posters here....Does anyone think this coin is cleaned?

Also, if you think this coin is cleaned, then why aren't you as strict with your coins you list on ebay?

What I am seeing from your comments regarding other people's coins graded by ICCS compared to your description of your raw coins listed on ebay is extremely inconsistent and very hypocritical.

It's been dipped sometime in its past, but proper dipping is not cleaning IMO or in ICCS' opinion, there are very few Victorian silver coins that have never had a thiourea bath.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I don't really consider a dipping to be cleaning unless it has been overly done. Although I see don't a point in dipping low-grade (Under VF-20) coins. This coin might have been dipped, which is fine because it was a while back and now has evenly toned over. I mean you can't expect a mid-grade 145 Year old coin to have never been messed with even a little. Especially after the mass dipping of coins in the 70's and 80's.

It's all about each person's point of view. I think that the graders at ICCS are more adept at grading than I and have more knowledge and experience. Does that mean I blindly "Buy the slab not the coin"? No. But generally I trust their opinions and those of CCF members over others.

One can hardly believe that a VF coin hasn't been cleaned many times over and over during it's circulating years. Actually it's been rubbed enough to wear it down from an MS to a VF. If that's not "cleaned" I don't know what is (I kidd). Graders really define "cleaned" as per recent/visable marks left on the coin. Reality is that this coin could have been "surface hair-lined" 140 years ago and the through circulation the lines would have eventually disappeared. You clean a brown copper coin and leave it in the sun/weather for a few weeks to have the toning return and mask any sign of cleaning. Does an old cleaning or a dip really matter on a VF coin? I'd say no unless someone recently took steel wool to it or dipped it for 24 hours and killed the appearance of the coin. MS coins are a whole different story.
