Been a while since I last posted, busy. Noticed something a little strange with a few of the silver coins I have. They seem to be picking up 'toning' at a fast rate, in fact, this Attica owl has changed so much that I removed my listing from ebay.... I changed the storage method for these coins from anywhere on my desk to a nice tidy case and since then the toning has occurred. I am thinking it's some type of chemical reaction but welcome other views. Here is one one the 'affected' coins. You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

I did a litle bit of snooping some time ago and it seems that most (yellow) toning is caused by sulphurous compounds and moisture. I couldnt turn out any rainbow tones with sulphur. In fact, you leave a silver coin near an egg and it will quickly pick up a golden hue.
So I'm thinking something near to the coins is giving off sulphur. Perhaps something which has been dyed. Perhaps you#re near a kitchen? Been eating a lot of omelettes recently?

I don't like eggs Ben. The case is in my office, a good way from any fumes. The trays inside are lined with a blue velvet type cloth and most of the coins are ok it is mainly the ones in the bottom tray. It's not a huge problem as I like clean silver anyway and am quite happy to clean them but I was quite surprised that such a change can occur in about a month. The Phoenicia AR stater, when in hand, has really turned a funny shade. Almost like when I was a kid (many years ago) and used to dunk silver 3d coins in urine, dry them out on the garage roof and wait for the rainbow effect to shine through.

I might be from the environment, the pollutants in the air.

You can get coin capsules up to 5mm in depth if your coins will fit, otherwise you could try wrapping in acid free tissue and keeping them in a tin or some such for a month to see if it stops the toning effect. Anything happened locally in the last month? Work on drains or other construction?

isn't some (or most) types of wood cabinets bad for that type of thing? what do you keep the trays in MD?

I do have a wooden, pigeon hole cabinet but the coins that are in there are all in capsules or flips. The ones that are toning are in an aluminium case, 5 trays in the case with a bit of sponge in the lid that squashes everything together when it's closed.

The owl has been in there about a month or so I think. The last time it came out was when I sent you a picture of it. The other stater has been in there since I purchased it... maybe 2 or 3 months tops. The picture of the stater doesn't show it well, I will post another one later.

The case is starting to look suspicious. Maybe some contamination on the trays? Try cleaning and replacing in the case with no trays for another month and check the progress. How do you clean your silver?

Toothbrush with water usually but if it's one I am keeping then I will use a dip or a silver cloth.

Certainly, the storage environment needs to be changed. A description of the storage environment during the period when the toning happened may be of help to enable us to advise what changes may be needed.
I don't use PVC materials for the storage of my collection, but that may not be the cause here anyway. I am more inclined to suspect the containers in which your albums may be in, or access of humidity to your collection, and or the presence of sulfur (maybe in glue?), of the container(s).
Perhaps a metal box and silica gel desiccant included would be the way to go in your case.

Kev that is dreadful. You got the case second hand, perhaps something was spilled in there. You could try washing the case out with something and ditch the trays, or at least leave them well away from where you keep your coins. They are cheap enough that I would probably ditch them and get new. Perhaps it is nothing but a bad set of trays. I would clean the case, leave them out, but keep a couple of coins in there to see if it happens again. Or you could go into the toning business, some people like it?

I might throw it away Ann, or sell it on the US ebay, they seem to like toned coins. I have never seen a coin 'tone' so quickly, I am just glad that I didn't put my better stuff in there. It's a strange one this, probably one for a chemist to answer. I personally hate the rainbow effect on any coin, it's almost always stuck on there to hide over cleaning or to get a higher price from the American market. Still, made an interesting topic!
