At the TOREX show in Toronto this past weekend, I acquired four coins for my Twelve Caesars bronze set which will be complete when the final coin arrives in the mail. Comment on the coins and prices paid is always appreciated.

Cool set, how was the show and traffic? I was worried about the traffic so me and the guy at my LCS decided to wait for the October show.

Well (from my perspective) bronze is always beautiful !

The Nero is a common type reverse and I believe it is probably Lugdunum (Lyon) issue. If you scan through ebay France this type crops up rather frequently and occasionally will sell for less but you are taking a chance when you go this route. Many sellers offer 'no returns' and this is a good reason why they can't get better prices. Nero is always popular and if you upgrade later on is fairly easy to trade.

Vitellius does not have much in the way of variety and this issue (from Tarraco) is the standard type. It took me almost 30 years before I found one I liked for a price I was willing to pay ! I paid less but yours has a better portrait and the name is quite boldly displayed. The reverse looks 'beveled' between 9-12 o'clock on the reverse. An illusion ?

The Titus is an interesting piece but it is a provincial (Alexandria ?) and a bit small at 21mm (although at 12.8 grams it has some heft !). I don't think you overpaid but I think an "imperial" type would fit in better with your theme. Still you can always trade up at a later date. Titus is always desirable.

The Domitian is 'okay' but on this one you may have been hasty. Again not that the price is bad but the coin is a bit corroded and you might feel it does not quite match up well with the others as far as its appearance. You did not break the bank of course and someday you will spot a better one and do the upgrade thing.

I hope you are not unhappy with my commentary as I believe in being honest. I acquired some VF/XF bronzes of Nero Titus and Domitian many years ago. I can't even afford what they sell for today !
But I did always try to be patient about finding these things. Which is one good reason I swore off of silver and gold 25 years ago. I knew I could never afford to buy everything and to be honest there are just too many fakes which are good enough to fool my trusting eye! At least with the bronze coinage I feel comfortable spotting the 'duds' and knowing that these are the real deal.
Even so modern technology is advancing so rapidly I wonder how long even this will last !

I personally don't go to many shows anymore and am stunned by the prices I see when I do go. The prices you paid seem to be in line with what they bring retail these days. The few coins I have been buying I buy on ebay auctions. I win very few. But I think I enjoy the hunt as much as I enjoy actually buying them.

I bought this As of 'Tito' as Caesar (SPES reverse) around 1995 from a dealer/friend. I don't actually remember what I paid but knowing what a cheapskate I am I doubt it was very much more than $100. The type (Spes) is again a common variety but it does have a few things going for it doesn't it. Besides being green !
I understand that prices have increased considerably but with patience I think this type might still be found (at auction) for around $200. Of course that requires some self restraint and a great tolerance for disappointment. Losing an auction for something you really want isn't pleasant but then again winning an auction for less than you expected is ............ priceless.

I am you showing this as I think the 'Imperial' issues are a better type for your quest. I started collecting 40 years ago with a similar goal (portraits of the 12 Caesars). Only Otho failed to mint an Imperial bronze and believe it or not ..... after 40 years I still don't have anything of him !

Titus (as Caesar) AE As

A more recent acquisition from France (2 years ago). Not one of the Caesars but indicative of what might be found. I won this one for somewhere around 110 euros. Needless to say I danced around the room a bit when I came out the winner (the sellers pics were rather so-so). The coin does have some sort of imperfection (looks like a piece of metal had adhered to the obv. die resulting in an odd indent below the chin) but from what prices I have seen at coin shows I think it would have been beyond my limited budget.

Patience can be very very difficult and whether you have the time to search is key. But it can also be rewarding ! There are deals out there but it takes some effort. I lose well over 90% of the time ...... But when I win ..... I win

Some very decent acquisitions FR. I particularly like the Germanicus.

Well ..... I really like it too !

And that is my point in showing these examples. Patience though very difficult will usually result in a more than satisfactory result ! It is hard to exercise restraint when one has an ultimate goal (in this case a series of portraits of the first imperial dynasty of Rome) and some money to spend.

Being of limited means I try to always exercise extreme caution ..... though I will on rare occasions get caught up in the moment (we all have our human failings !). I really don't advise waiting 20 years or more like I did ....
The 'old man' always told me.

I only have four more to get, unfortunately they are Julius Caesar, Galba, Otho and Vitellius.

So the set won't be completed by this weekend then.
