But everything I have read states that the type one proofs were done at the Philadelphia mint without an S mark were destroyed and replaced with different one's bearing the S mark. The type 2 was made at the San Francisco mint and all have and S mark. Except for one which was found in a cash register at some department store and is now in a private collection.
This is true, but as you said YOUR coin is not a proof.
Philadelphia made both type 1 and type 2 business strikes with no mintmark.
Denver made both type 1 and type 2 business strikes with a D mintmark.
San Francisco made type 1 40 % silver business strike quality and proofs with an S mint mark.
They did NOT make any 40% silver type 2 coins.San Francisco made both type 1 and type 2 coppernickel clad proofs with an S mintmark.
