Hello,

I'm fairly new here (and to coin collecting in general). I have the opportunity to purchase a slabbed 1881 S Morgan for $200 (graded MS67).

Any comments?

I have to say that it seems like something that I would jump on. I just have a thing about MS67 Morgans. You only live once. How many marks are on the cheek? I would have to have a flawless face on my favorite girl other than Minnie Pearle.

Who graded it? If not PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG, run away. Can you post pictures of the coin?
Rest in Peace

with noD. It must be a real TPG to even consider purchasing a Morgan at MS67. Anything else is just a plastic coin suit. (Love that term SD).

First off, welcome.

Besides who assigned it that MS67 grade, also, what's the source? A reputable dealer, or some essentially anonymous online seller? Lots of pitfalls for the beginner in a deal like this.

Sounds like another SGS "graded" coin or a straight-up scam.

Whether or not you should jump on it will depend on who slabbed it, and whether or not the grading is accurate. If it isn't by one of the top services the chances of ever being able to sell it as a MS-67 are slight. Secondly there are coins even in the top services that are not accurately graded. If YOU are not qualified to accurately grade the coin yourself you may find that you have purchased an over graded coin. (Fortunately you are somewhat protected by the grading guarantees of the top services in this case.)

False alarm here; it is not a PCGS or NGC. Some fly-by-night operation. It doesn't even look like other MS67 1881 Morgans.

I'll just stick to ungraded ASEs and 90% silver that I enjoy.
