The fiver sure makes you wonder what happened in the Treasury that they had to start cranking out unimaginative uglies like we have now. About the last semi decent looking note is the $2 bill.
Thanks for sharing.

Can you imagine the poor person who had to sign and number them?!

Because the colonial notes were signed by several signers, they were often transported to another location for another signer. During the revolution it was not unusual for the British to capture notes that were not completely signed yet. You have to wonder why they had people signing them at all when you consider there were sometimes dozens of signers, each of whose signatures vary(I have 8 notes from Massachusetts, all signed by Peter Boyer) as they sign them. I really don't think handsigning in this case did a lot of good. Ben Franklin's leaf image and the mica flecks were about the best guard against counterfeits, but the British even found ways around that.

The "Forty Dollars" looks just like the one on History Dectectives on PBS TV. Really cool! LeAnn

Remember Spanish Milled dollars were used by US citizens until the civil war...about 100 years after the colonies began their break from England!

ChristinaM, they can be seen here: http://www.banknotebank.com/user_vi...d=UkrainaDviI have a fairly sizable collection on there, so on the scroll down menu at the top select USA, and then you can scroll down and see all my colonial era notes. I think I have about 40-50 or so of them from 1760 on up.
