Been devoting a considerable time into grading.. I downloaded the pcgs photograde app.. And when I can I get "slabs" and look over the grades for comparison.. Since grading is ever so "dangerous and subjective" does anyone grade there own things? Of my 6 LCS's only two actually throw a "grade" most use au/bu case in point.. I have a 1932s the guy has for 140.00 dollars he graded AU.. When I compared my photograde its a au58 this is probably going to be the coin I buy to complete my 1932-1998 pds non proof book.. Guess my major curiosity to this is for insurance reasons... Yea silver melt..i intentionally got away from that.. I'm getting pretty good (in my mind) at this but I guess ya never know unless you..get challenged? Is it worth it to take them into a numismatist and have them graded? Case in point any proof minted from 1971 and on..u grade 99.9% and it seems the grade is 69dcam... So overall whats the point of TPG on moderns? Its the pre71 coins.. I did some swapping in my lincoln dansco book of several early 60''s coins looking for RB ms62 and up all coins are mint sets coins..overall I think a collection can go through constant upgrades until one reaches that higest overall? Thoughts?

Never ending quest....regardless of series. Some series are rather expensive to complete at XF (and read that TRUE, NICE, XF) or above.

Buffalo nickels - there is so many different grading criteria within the dates and mintmarks. Same with Standing Liberty quarters. Same with some of the Mercury dimes. Need we discuss IHC's? Lincoln Memorials, in FULL step strikes, are a serious challenge.

Washington quarters - when a person becomes a true "student" of this series, there are several dates/mm that are HARD coins to find in 64/65/above. I am just now studying this series and beginning a collection.

Grading has both Objective and subjective aspects to it.
Therefore there will never be hard and fast definitions for each grade.
But if you are going to buy raw coins you'll HAVE to be able to grade as well as to detect cleaning, fakes and alterations.
That's where the TPG's make their bucks; most people can't do it all.

To get a broader feeling for grading I suggest you add the ANA Grading Guide to you library.

Grading coins should be some sort of art form. It takes skill and knowledge
