1882 Indian Head cent possible DDO & Die Crack?

Snagged this off ebay hoping it is a DDO with small die crack on United States. With a whole bunch of bids the last second it went for $28 including shipping.

I know the pictures are not great but figured give it a shot?

Cool site, I ordered the snow Indian head book 2.0 and I see the new 3.0 is out in pdf form just been waiting if I should get that one. Was just testing to see it I could pick stuff from ebay from photos. and been hoarding xf+ full liberties from all local sources so I have coins to search threw. But they are hard to find locally.

Nice coin! What you are seeing is Longacre Doubling. Sorry about being the harbinger of bad news...

and often coins like IHC, 3CN, and Two Cent Pieces that often exhibit Longacre's doubling are passed off as double die coins, just like Machine Doubling neither which should add any value at all. I too have bought coins thinking they were DDO or DDR only to find out it was not to be. Not a bad looking coin though.

You will often find Longacre doubling on coins with die cracks, as the doubling will occur on die that have been in use for some time previously, then rebasined/or hardened, from my understanding. I'm not sure there is a 100% agreement on what exactly cause Longacre Doubling by all coin experts.
