Saw this on ebay and it looks like the date might be an RPD 888. Any thoughts? Also, what do you think the grade/value might be (best guess)?

Cleaned and recolored in my opinion. As for any repunching in the date, there are no Snow varieties with repunching of 888 to the north (I checked Snow 1 through Snow 33). the most interesting part of this coin is the cracks on the reverse.

also a planchet defect (maybe struck through debris) under AM of the obverse that will take down the price.

I know there is an 1875 variety(S16) with the dot on the 'N'. It was believed that it was put there deliberately to catch a mint employee who was stealing. Looks very similar to this coin.
Rest in Peace

Intriguing. What reference did this come from?

A numismatic archivist had written an article in 1972 in "Numismatic Scrapbook" magazine alerting the world to the fact that such cents with a "secret mark" had been produced in 1875. This was authenticated by correspondence found in the National Archives.

I got the information for the S16 variety in Snow's attribution guide, but I seem to remember this being discussed in previous threads on this forum
