Grading special of the day. What say ye? Bryan, you are not allowed in on this one. I'm still working on my photo skills, so I apologize. The color is pretty close, but the depth of field is lacking. I will reveal the grade after you folks have some fun.....

Strong 64. The gouge between the date and the first star may be all that limits it.

I'm going nuts trying to attribute this one. You'd think the broken 4th star would be a good starting point, but as common as it is on 1878-S's, it doesn't get much mention on Philadelphia coins. At least, not Short Nock Rev. 78's.

MS-65+ Beautiful coin, think the defects I see are on the old holder.

SuperDave don't feel bad, I had this coin in hand and misattributed it. It has every die marker of a VAM-100 with the chips around "we trust" and all but it has a obverse that one would think was from a vam-41 (I guess because its the main one that mentions the broken star point) but was paired with a regular 7TF reverse instead 7/8. I have not been able to find any other example of this particular die marriage (and believe me I have looked)but its going to take someone with more knowledge about ALL the 1878 VAM's than I have or know where to acquire such knowledge from because even the updates do not have a thing about the attributes this coin shows

it also seems that the die cracks on the reverse would be atleast worth a mention about this particular VAM especially the one running through the wing and going through the D of UNITED. but again I come up short in the hunt.

Well Bryan, I think it's safe to say if you can't place this VAM, it may just go without a definite attribution. I'll post the grade tonight when I get home in case more folks want to take a stab.

It depends on who graded it. I see an MS-62 from PCGS maybe an MS-63 from NGC

this coin is in an old green holder as well. It was part of my collection that I had to part with late last year, its good to see someone taking such good care of it and its definately a higher end 64, it just has some weird toning in spots
