Just thought I'd post this for your grading and other observations. I liked the extensive reverse die cracks, and wasn't too put off by the cleaning/whizzing because the coin actually still cartwheels in the light and looks nice.

Given the problems and the pluses I thought F money was appropriate for it. I might go back for the rest tomorrow.

I don't have a grading book or any reference material with me right now, but regardless of the cleaning, the eye appeal to me is a VF coin. Like I said, no idea what Photograde or any other book would say, but if I saw this somewhere and knew the pricing for VF in this series, I would probably give up that much money. I think the shield is the only thing with a lot of rub. The weak spots at 11 o'clock almost seem like a weak strike or whatever the term is when one side is a little higher than the other during the strike.....I like it.

Hi HABIB,
The reverse actually has quite a strong strike, with definition visible on almost all the rays and stars. The obverse is not as nice; it looks dull (from the cleaning?) and kind of blunt, probably from the strike. The reverse cracks are cool. The mint really beat the heck out of those dies trying to strike up the nickel planchets!

Since your coin still has cartwheel luster, it should grade EF-40 or 45 based on wear. The weak obverse and cleaning lowers the value, but if you got it for Fine-12 money I think you did very well.

How about EF-40?

Thank you for your comments, I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to return it, but I think I'll keep it. The reverse was the selling point as far as I was concerned. I'm tempted to display it reverse side up in the 7070.

After looking at the obverse for a while I've concluded that a combination of weak strike, a die break, and the (old?) cleaning led to the flattening of "TRUST."

Thanks again--HABIB

The problem with the cleaning is that in this case, it was whizzed. You can see the harsh lines even in the picture. What appears to be luster is really the effects of the whizzing. It should have gone for less than $30.00

I agree with the whizzed comment. Pretty common back in the 70's to see these type coins worn down yet nice and shiney.

Cleaned...whizzed, yep. I'll take as many as you all can find like this for $30.
