Hi coinman, sorry for not replying to this in a more timely manor but I just had a quick look & thought someone else would answer.

It looks to me like the coin was struck & the piece that is missing then came away at some later time or was lifted up & was broken off.
There was a flaw in the strip of metal the planchets were cut from,it's called a cold shut.

When I was reading up on it they said that this is a metal flaw because they used the 1942 one penny coins and stamped the 1943 onto it but they used too much force and they broke because they double hit them

Double striking a coin would either leave the impression of 2 strikes or would leave a single well defined impression (as is often done by mints in striking specimen and proof coins).
The error is a lamination peel, not uncommon in Australian pre decimal, but your one is a better example that error collectors would like. Only worth a few dollars at most.

the 1943 restrike proof was different than other proofs it was made to look like original coin but was double struck and the rim slants inward instead of being flat

Hi Coinman

It's definately a planchet flaw.

Below is a 1950 one that I had.

After listing it for ages on ebay, it eventually sold for $15.

Hope this helps.
