My first thought was PMD, I have seen coins similar to this. Then I thought: how did it get smashed on both sides without affecting the rim? Then I found this weird looking rim thing over "AMERICA". So, even though I am still leaning toward PMD of some kind, I have learned to never assume when it comes to coin errors. Does anybody know how this happened? I would appreciate all help and opinions, thanks!

PMD.
That's what is called a "Dryer coin."
That coin has spent some time in a dryer, getting hit numerous times on its edge/ surfaces.
The thick edge and the surface gives it away.
Take a look at this thread about Dryer Coins 101:

I wondered if that might be the case, thanks!
