I am extremely new to the hobby and just made my first coin purchase today. I was hoping to get some opinions on the grade of this coin and the reason for said grade. Thanks for the help!

There are several places on the reverse that are pitted. That will give this coin a details grade

This is not an answer you are going to like, but I would be suspicious of this coin for a few reasons. It looks to have been cleaned, looks bent by A in AMERICA, and is pitted.

Sometimes these can be used to make a counterfeit appear to have been heavily circulated. Did you buy it from a reputable dealer?

I purchased it at a small coin show. I figured it was cheaper than others because of the pitting but the ridges seemed relatively crisp. Live and learn I guess. I appreciate the feedback.

Welcome to the hobby too. You did purchase a tougher coin. Everyone typically gets burned at the beginning, I know I did. The key is to educate yourself by looking at graded examples on ebay and heritage. See what they sell for, and make your best judgement as to what you think coins are worth.

Good advice from raider. The coin would probably grade VF details. look closely at the surfaces. The digs on reverse are fairly severe. On the obverse the surface shows signs of a harsh cleaning attributable to the scratches as well as the dull washed out color. You chose one of the more difficult series to start with even for long time collectors. My advice would be to pick a series you are drawn to then learn as much as you can about the series. Learn the various grades and how to determine the clues of a coin that was cleaned. There are many sources nonlinear including this site. Use this site to ask questions and gain knowledge

There is a positive that you can take away from your purchase- you chose an interesting coin, not some random common dreck. Yes, the coin has problems but it has a mintage of only 720,000 and it is the only 3 cent silver to carry a mintmark

A neat and interesting series, hard to master the grading, Kevin Flynn has a nice book on the 3CS series you may want to look into if you keep on chasing them for a collection. One of the only books done on them really, as there is just not a lot of information out there on this interesting series of coinage.

I'd say the coin is detail grade due to the tick marks on the reverse and what appears to be a dent or bend in the coin. A tough date but I think it's real. The date logotype and lettering look pretty spot on from what I can see in these small photos. For a comparison try checking over at Heritage Auctions website, you may need an account if you don't already have one (that is free), they have excellent photos to do comparison checks with, and coins in all grades and price levels in their archives, a veritable treasure trove of information there.

P.S. to the CCF glad to have you here!

Thank you all for the great info. I plan on continuing to collect the Three Cent Silvers. I already have the Kevin Flynn book on order and can't wait to dig into it. I will have to check out the HA website more. I have only glanced at it in passing so far.
