What do you all think of these two photos? I think the rev's color is about the "true color". Although I have got to say the coin looks different depending on what light you use to look at it.

I did not use any diffusion. I used two Ikea laps. The coin was elevated above the background.

I used a Cannon D-60 SLR with a 100mm Marco lens.

I pulled this photo of a similar coin off an auction web site. I would like my photo to look closer to this. I think I am getting closer. Any suggestions?

Looks to me like you've done a good job.
My only suggestion would be to use a non-reflective black or dark gray background when you take you images.
You want the camera to see mostly the light coming from the coin.
You DON'T want it influenced by the background color or brightness.

The "look" you're getting is due to your lights being at a low angle. You can tell because the edges of the devices are bright, but the surfaces are not. I posted a thread a while back to illustrate this. I used a BU coin, so the result is a bit different vs your circulated coin, but you can get the idea. The image in your second post is done at a bit higher angle, though still not particularly high. Here's my old thread for reference:

Okay rmps, I switched to a higher angle with the lights. Also using a black background , Kanga. I think I got the technique down now. Thanks!
