I recently inherited my grandfather's coin collection. Not asking for advice, just posting pics of all the coins! There's some great stuff in it from all sorts of countries and eras! Here is an 1897 Morgan dollar in AU details. 2 Peace dollars. Unfortunately both are damaged. The 1924 is cleaned and the 1934 is a little banged up. 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent. Ouch... I wonder what this coin has been through. Dateless Two-Cent Piece. Canadian Large Cents, one 1907 King Edward VII and one 1911 King George V. British Half Pennies, a 1907 Edward VII and a 1920 George V. Very worn 1856-A French Copper with Napoleon III on the obverse. 1912 Greek 20 Lepta. Here's the oldest dated coin I have, a 1791 Dutch Colonial Copper. It says "STAD UTRECHT". Italian coins. The top two are both 1920-R 50c. The bottom two are (from right to left) 1924-R and 1926-R 10c. From top to bottom: 1908 silver Italian 1/2 Lira, 1923-R Italian 2 Lire. 1861-M Italian 5c. Oldest coin from Italy I have. These two Italian Coins are from the 1950s. When my grandfather was stationed in Europe in the 50s he picked these up. The 100 lire at the top is uncirculated. All of the other coins from Italy where brought to America when my family moved here. Random Swedish Copper! Edited by wheatchaser140 07/01/2014 09:55 am

I enjoy the designs on the Italian coins from this period. The 2 Ore coin is from Sweden I believe.

Quote: I enjoy the designs on the Italian coins from this period. I completely agree. This period in Italian coinage is also quite rich in history. The 1861-M 5c copper depicts Victor Emanuel II, the first king of unified Italy. 1861 was also the first year of the Kingdom of Italy. Before that it was just several quarreling nation-states. The coins from the early 20th century show Victor Emanuel III, the last king of Italy. A lot of the designs seem to have been inspired by Ancient Roman coinage. On the 1923-R 2 life you can see the fascist imagery on the reverse. Under Victor Emanuel III's rule Benito Mussolini gained power. I can't really post what my late grandfather told me he thought of Mussolini on this forum! He also HATED the Mafia. The two I have from the 1950s were struck during the early days of the Italian Republic, after the fall of fascism following World War Two. They are beautiful coins, aren't they? Quote: The 2 Ore coin is from Sweden I believe. Thanks o-train! Edited.

Great start for a collection. And a variety from a lot of places. As to the Large Cent. Imagine what you'ld look like if you were that old.

My condolences Wheatchaser on the loss of your Grandfather. The collection you inherited from your Grandfather is awesome. I love that Morgan dollar and all the older foreign coins. I too myself started picking up older foreign coins pieces (Pre 1940). And my favorite you have is the 1791 Dutch Colonial Copper. Just the history of that coin is enough to make me drool. Enjoy them.

Thank you all! He was a good man and a real inspiration to me. He got me started in collecting! We would roll hunt together, and completed a State Quarters set in a green Littleton folder. I remember almost ten years ago he showed me this collection, and as a little kid I was absolutely amazed by it. That day my grandfather reaches into his collection and handed me a copper 1920-R 10 centisimi piece from Italy. I still have and treasure that coin. I wouldn't be on this forum or even collecting coins at all if it wasn't for him. By the way, my grandfather was also a school principal for decades. I don't want to say too much, but does Mr. D sound familiar to anyone who went to school in Massachusetts? Just curious. Here is a picture of the 1920-R Italy 10c I mentioned:

I am truly sorry for the loss of your grandfather. You inherited some nice coins. I really like the look of that dateless 2-cent piece.
