i posted a dime and ask for help but did not explain exactly what it was I was look at also did not post opposite side of the coin for you to see. the dime in question has a small round circle in the middle of Roosevelt's face the image under this circle seams to be more detailed than rest of coin and also yes the rim of dime. the other side of dime does not have the same wear affects?

It is just a coin that someone has ground down with some kind of tool.

Welcome to the forum!

Looks like it was smashed against a washer. Regardless of how it was done it is damage and not an error coin. Sorry.

Vice: 1. Immoral habit 2.Depravity.
Vise: Device for clamping something being worked on.
Big difference in meaning of the spelling of this word.

I agree with it being squashed with one or two washers if the reverse looks like this also. PSD

I have combined your two threads. No need to start a new one for the same coin and question.
Rest in Peace

With the new pictures I can understand your thoughts that this is an error and not damage. But I am afraid I still have to stick with damage. It looks like the coin was smashed between two different materials. The obverse was smashed against something hard (like metal) with a hole in it. The reverse was smashed against something softer (like hard wood, plastic, hard rubber, ect) that conformed around the detail then applied pressure to the reverse protecting it. It is hard to tell from your photos but I think there is some metal pushed out at the edge where UNITED is on the reverse and the higher fine details on the reverse appear fuzzy (such as the sharp edges of the letters and the leaves) but this could just be from the fuzziness of the photo. So even though it is a clue to authenticity a coin can become damaged on one side while not being damaged on the other. It just means you need to look closer. Check out the detail and the edge to see if it is just from the photo.

The flattening of the rims tells me it is damage. The coin and washer may have been placed between to pieces of leather to prevent the reverse to be altered. But the rims are flattened when you look closely.
