Hi All,

Can anyone recommend some books on the Revolutionary War and Civil War that contains only historical facts and possibly the events that lead up to these historical wars.

Thanks
John

Well, back in the 70's it was a text book. Sorry to say you might have to Google it now. I really don't know. Sorry.

As to coins of used up to and during that era I can heartily recommend Q. David Bowers book "American Numismatics Before the Civil War, 1760-1860: Emphasizing the Story of Augustus B. Sage"

"Atlas of the English Civil War" by P.R. Newman (haven't read it myself, but a friend (high school history teacher) highly recommends it).
"Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013!

John,

In the scope of finding good books, I as a former book collector would classify your books into one of three categories:

- Reference Books
- Fiction/ Historical Fiction Books
- Non-Fiction Books

You might wonder why I include "Fiction" books in this post, given your initial post, but I find more facts in some fiction books than you might think!

Now, as far as refernce goes... I recommend The Encyclopedia of the Civil War, by ABC-CLIO, ISBN 1576070662 as a NICE reference book.

For non-fiction & fiction books, this all depends on taste in author, and because of political views, and the dangers of offending others, you will have to probably go this one on your own! I prefer books by Joseph Ellis (His Excellency) and Founding Brothers (also Joseph Ellis).

Finally, Benson Bobrick's "Angel in the Whirlwind" is an EXCELLENT book on the revolution, at least on the macro level. I personally am Revolutionary Way nerd, and I am not at all interested in the Civil War.

Please let me know if you have specific topics of interest, as I have an extensive library of Revolutionary War books (not so many on the Wr Between the States), and I am open to indefinitely lending you a book, if it helps with either your knowledge of the revolution, or any other areas of interest.

I am a new member, and you will see in my introduction that I am a rare book collector and dealer - converted to coins....so I still have a house where the interior perimeter of our house is completely lined with 5-shelf bookshelves in every single room, execpt one of the two bathroom!

Best,
Keith

Thanks everyone for your input.

@ Keith, Thanks for the breakdown. I contacted a library about 10 miles from my house that is older and outdated than many of the refurbished ones closer to my home. This lady says she has some lightly used text books on American History with the causes that lead up to the wars itself. I am going there today and checking out what she has.

Thanks Keith for the offer and I will keep you in mind if this trip yields nothing.

John, just let me know, as there is no bigger "Ego-Stroke" for me than lending out my library!

Best,
