I wanted to get an opinion on this 1944 silver Wheat penny that I own. I've purchased it recently from someone who claims that his grandfather gave it to him, but am really unsure if its the real deal... the coin is highly magnetic, and the weight on it is correct too, (2.7 grams). I just don't know if the 44 looks right or not on it. As you can see, its not in the best shape, and there is some corrosion on it, but it does pass the 2 major tests (weight and magnetic). Any input would be great.

Welcome!! Yes, we're going to need clearer and larger pics. Can you take it out of the 2x2 at the very least? If it's the date in question, can you get a closer shot of that as well? Thanks!

Some better pics under a very bright light to illuminate the details would help. I'm not an expert at spotting counterfeit '44 steel cents, but I know that there are some very high quality fakes out there--$10,000+ coins tend to attract a lot of unsavory individuals with access to expensive tools.
There are members who can help identify a phony. Your coin looks promising so far based on the weight, but it's always healthy to be skeptical when you possibly have a potential $100,000 coin in your possession. At any rate, you cannot expect to sell this without first having it certified as genuine by a professional grading service--our members can only save you the grading fee if it's a clear counterfeit.
At any rate, good luck!

And just as a clarification, it would be a steel penny, not silver.

Quote: the coin is highly magnetic, Made of steel and originally Zinc plated. Possibly one of the most plated coins on Earth. Some are plated with Copper for fun.

^1944's aren't ever plated with copper, only the 1943's are. 1944's are often plated with zinc though.
As to what it could be...if real, it's either a US 1943 steel blank, or it was struck on a 1944 Belgian 2 Franc blank. Both blanks can be determined from each other, although I'm not sure how. The Belgian 2 Franc blank, although valuable, is not as valuable as if it were struck on a US 1943 blank.
Good luck!

I would be extremely surprised if this is genuine. Pics or no pics, the probability of another 1944 steel cent being discovered is just so low. Maybe I'm just a pessimist (or a realist) but that's just me....

Don't mean to stray off topic but is the 1944 more rare than the 1943. My father had a safe full of coins and I've got the book he listed all his coins in, there is a 1943 and a 1943s listed.
