So I got my really old wallet (which I haven't used in many years) out and this was the oldest note in there. I didn't remember when I got it but as far as I know it's the only note from a previous series my mom has ever gotten in circulation during my lifetime when I'm old enough to remember what the money looked like.

It still smells a bit like fish, I would hate to know what the cloth in the wallet smells like now But what do you expect from the fishmonger at the wet market's change.

It's been probably in my wallet for way more than 5 years, because I found a proof of payment to the dentist, dated 2005.

Edit: It might have been in there for 9 years! I checked all the banknotes in there and there was nothing with later emission then 2005.

You'll find the actual date of issue in the bottom right-hand corner.
The last year of issue for this note was 2000.

This was issued in 2000. It's unusual to receive somethig this nice in 2004/5, especially because this is the smallest denomination note and it gets passed around a lot. Indonesian banknotes will be so dirty and crumpled even though it was in circulation for less than a year, looking like it needs to be replaced. I guess that's why they stopped using polymer, since being constantly passed around in the wet market does funny things to the intaglio.

The wallet is from cloth, considering I never aired it out before this it must smell funny too!

I don't know how much you could get at year 2000 (I was way too young to remember), but I don't think it's very far from now. The big inflation was in 1998, price of buying US Dollar rose from 2000 to 16000 (my history teacher said), all your money become worthless. Now you can get maybe 10-15 sweets with that Rp 1000. Now they removed the Rp1000 note and replaced it with a coin, and I don't think they will issue any more smaller denomination coins. A lot are still circulating.
