I will be putting on a 2 part presentation to my coin club on collecting banknotes. I plan to talk at first meeting about grading and the 2nd meeting about errors, radar, star notes, etc.
The plan is to show members what the differences between very good, fine, very fine and extra fine. Not bothering about Uncirculated at this time.
I thought that I would take a piece of paper and make folds in it to demonstrate this portion of grading and how it affects value.
What other factors do you see as having importance that I should talk to them about?
Would appreciate all input.
Thank you

Good idea!.. The crispness of the note would be helpful in your presentation, it makes quite a difference in the grade.

Also take special note that even Crisp UNC notes might have round corners..This will also affect the grade.

Cleanliness of the note. "Graffiti". With Canadian notes, value can vary based on Prefix and/or signature. Uncut pairs and sheets of notes? Sequential series of notes?

Another great idea would be to grab a hold of about 30x $1 bills at the bank. More than likely, all the circulated grades would be represented well in this small amount. They will make a better presentation to your audience if they can see it first hand on actual notes.

I am happy you are presenting to coin club.,.I did one for mine last year on 1c.,.Others here stole what I would say,.,So I will add- To know and remember the keys that make a note one notch lower (It is lower because ex.rounded cornors.,.)O r in other words the highest it can attain is .. becuse it has this key flaw.,.

I would also talk about feeling of embossing... the number of folds.. a hard fold versus a soft fold... how to identify a counting flick.. what natural rippling versus water damage may do to a note...what foxing is and how to identify it at it's earliest stages..
How to use a nice soft back light to identify if a note has been pressed.
Geeze so much comes to my head ... hope the presentation goes well.. good luck.. let us know how it goes !

I have already told the club at the July meeting that banknotes is on our radar for August. I told them to bring their wallets as we will be looking at the bills they have there as a reference. Also if they have older bills that they need identified and possible suggested grading by club experts, we can do that too. We only have 20 minutes for a presentation so it will be brief but informative.
